Short answer
A fake Vacheron Constantin complication copies the outside of a reference such as the Patrimony Perpetual Calendar, the Traditionnelle Tourbillon, or the Overseas Chronograph, and does not use a Vacheron Constantin movement. Most copies keep the subdial layout and drop the function. A calendar that never advances, a tourbillon cage that does not rotate, or a repeater with no gongs are the common signs.
What Vacheron Constantin complications are
Vacheron Constantin has worked in Geneva since 1755. The company builds its own movements and sells watches with perpetual calendar, tourbillon, minute repeater, split-seconds chronograph, world time, and moon phase. Reference numbers to know: Patrimony Perpetual Calendar 43175, Traditionnelle Tourbillon 6000T, Overseas Chronograph 5500V, Historiques American 1921.
Where fakes fail
Movement
Genuine pieces use in-house calibers, often stamped with the Poincon de Geneve. Copies use stock or cloned movements: Seagull ST19 chronographs, ETA 2824 clones, DG2813, or decorated Chinese automatics. A perpetual calendar on a copy is often a printed disk or a 24-hour wheel with new labels.
Case and weight
Vacheron Constantin cases come in 18k white, rose, or yellow gold, platinum, and steel on some Overseas models. Gold has about twice the density of brass or steel. A 41 mm Overseas on a bracelet weighs about 160 to 180 grams. Plated copies land under 130 grams in most cases.
Finishing
Real bridges carry Geneva stripes, bevelled edges, and black-polished steel parts. Copies show uniform machine striping, rounded edges, and no inward angles.
Dial
Genuine dials use applied gold markers, sunburst or opaline finishes, and printed text with sharp serifs. Copies use glued markers, flat paint, and soft type.
Checks you can run
- Time the calendar. Move the date past a month end and watch the day and moon phase.
- Watch the tourbillon. The cage should make one turn per minute.
- Weigh the watch.
- Inspect the movement through the caseback at 10x magnification.
- Compare caseback reference and serial numbers to the papers.
- Request a Vacheron Constantin archive extract for pre-owned pieces.
Legal note
Counterfeit watches are illegal to import into the United States. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes them and can fine the importer. Vacheron Constantin does not publish a licensed replica line, so any watch sold as a high quality clone of a complication reference is a copy.
