The Short Answer
A Speedmaster Pro replica lives or dies on four things: a 42mm case with 20mm lugs, a true 3-6-9 subdial layout with running seconds at 9, a matte black dial under a domed crystal, and a thin black tachymeter bezel insert with crisp printing. Nail those and the watch reads correctly from arm's length. Miss them and no amount of polishing or packaging saves it.
I look at the dial first, then the bezel, then the pushers. The rest is detail work you can fix or live with.
Dial and Subdial Layout
This is the fastest tell. The real watch has a 30-minute counter at 3, a 12-hour counter at 6, and small running seconds at 9. A lot of cheap builds use a 7750-style chronograph module, which pushes the 30-minute counter to 12 o'clock. If the top subdial moves when you start the chrono, walk away.

Other dial checks:
- Matte black finish with a slight grain, not a glossy lacquer that throws hard reflections.
- No date window. The Speedmaster Professional has never had one.
- White baton hands with clean lume fill. The chrono seconds hand should have a flat arrow tip that reaches the minute track.
- Print quality on "OMEGA," "Speedmaster," and "PROFESSIONAL." Look at letter spacing and weight, not just the words.
- Applied metal logo on later references, printed logo on older ones. Both exist, so match the version you are buying.
Case, Lugs, and Bezel
Expect 42mm across, 20mm between the lugs, and roughly 13.5mm to 14mm thick. The lugs have a lyre shape with a light bevel along the top edge. If they look slab-sided or the bevel is missing, the case is a generic copy.
The bezel insert should be anodized aluminum, thin, and set slightly below the crystal edge. Tachymeter numerals need to be sharp and evenly spaced from 500 down to 60. Vintage fans should note the dot-over-90 layout on older references versus the dot-next-to-90 on modern ones. Either can be right. Mixing the two is not.
Crystal: Hesalite Versus Sapphire
Hesalite is domed, warm, and slightly cloudy at the edges. It has no anti-reflective coating, so light pools across it instead of vanishing. Sapphire versions are flatter, harder, and usually coated on the inside only.
The giveaway on a bad replica is heavy blue anti-reflective coating on the outside of the glass. Real Speedmasters do not glow purple. If the crystal looks tinted under indoor light, skip it.
Movement and Pushers
The Moonwatch is a manual-wind chronograph. A display back showing an automatic rotor is wrong unless the build is specifically mimicking a sapphire sandwich reference.
Test the pushers before you commit. Start, stop, and reset should feel firm with a clear click. The chrono seconds hand should snap back to 12 and stay there when you reset. A lazy reset means worn levers or a cheap module, and it will get worse.
Caseback and Bracelet
Go with a solid steel caseback. The engraving should include the seahorse, the hippocampus, and the NASA flight qualification text. Uneven depth on the engraving is a common shortcut.
On the bracelet, look for flat links with brushed surfaces, a signed clasp, and end links that sit flush against the case with no gaps. Sharp edges on the links are worth a few minutes with a polishing cloth.

Blue-tinted crystals, glossy dials, date windows, subdials at 12, cases over 44mm, and bracelets with visible gaps at the end links. Any one of these breaks the illusion, and most cheap builds have two or three at once. Pay for the dial and the case lines, because those are the parts you see every time you check the time.
