What the genuine fluted bezel is
Rolex fits the Datejust fluted bezel in solid 18k gold. On steel and Rolesor Datejust models, that bezel is 18k white gold. On full gold models it matches the case in yellow, white, or Everose gold.
The fluted bezel started as a working part. On early Oyster cases the flutes gave a tool something to grip, so the bezel could be screwed down. That action pressed the crystal against the case and helped seal it. On a modern Datejust the bezel is decorative. The watch is still rated to 100 m.

Each flute is a ridge with two angled faces. The angles throw light in different directions as the wrist moves. That is the shimmer people notice.

Three ways replica bezels are made
- Casting. Molten metal fills a mold. Edges come out rounded. Flute depth varies around the circle.
- Stamping. A die presses a flat disc. Cheap and fast. Flutes are shallow and the profile is soft.
- CNC machining. A cutter removes metal from a solid blank. Flutes hold a sharp edge and repeat depth. The better replicas use this method.
Plating and metal
Most replicas use 316L stainless steel under gold plating. Plating thickness runs from about 0.5 microns to 3 microns. Thicker plating lasts longer. It still wears at the flute edges first, because edges take contact. Some makers offer PVD coatings that resist wear better than electroplating.
A small number of replica makers sell solid gold bezels. Third-party assay of gold content is not standard. Claims without assay are unproven.
Color is a common tell. White gold plating on steel can look gray or yellow next to a genuine piece.
Checks you can do by hand
- Run a fingernail along a flute edge. Sharp edges catch. Rounded edges slide.
- Turn the watch under a lamp. Flutes should flash in sequence, not all at once.
- Check the gap where the bezel meets the case. A visible seam above the crystal seat can let moisture in.
- Look at the cyclops. Genuine Datejust magnification is about 2.5x. Many replicas run 1.5x to 2x.
Fit and water resistance
A bezel that does not seat flush leaves the crystal gasket loose. Most replica sellers do not pressure test their watches. Assume no water resistance unless a test result is provided.
What is not known
Rolex does not publish the flute count on the Datejust. Replica flute counts vary by maker and model. Case sizes on the genuine line are 31 mm, 36 mm, and 41 mm.
