The short answer
A replica Rolex 1908 52513 comes down to two things: the case silhouette and the small seconds subdial at 6 o'clock. Get those right and it reads as a proper 39mm gold dress piece from across a table. Get them wrong and nothing else, box, papers, the lot, can rescue it. Most replicas in this reference fail on thickness first, then on a flat, printed-looking subdial the real watch does not have.
So before you buy, ask for three photos: a straight-on dial shot, a side profile next to a ruler, and a macro of the subdial. If the seller will not send those, move on.
What the real 1908 is, so you know what to compare against
Rolex introduced the Perpetual 1908 in 2023 as the replacement for the Cellini. The reference numbers inside the family, 52506, 52508, 52509 and 52513, mark different case metals and dial finishes rather than a different watch. The architecture is shared. Automatic calibre 7140, 66 hours of power reserve, Syloxi silicon hairspring, Chronergy escapement, Superlative Chronometer certification at -2/+2 seconds a day. The case measures 39mm across and about 9.5mm thick, water resistant to 50m.
There is no luminous material anywhere on the dial. Hour markers are applied and faceted. A fine railway track rings the outside, and the small seconds hand sits at 6. The strap is alligator, the clasp is 18k gold.
Where replica versions cut corners
- Case height. A 2824-based build inside a thin case tends to run 10.5mm or more. That extra millimetre changes how the watch sits under a cuff, and it is the easiest tell in a side profile.
- Subdial. The genuine subdial is recessed with a real step and its own snailed finish. Cheap reps print a circle and call it done.
- Dial print. Watch the railway track and the text. Thick, blurry or uneven printing shows up fast on a macro shot.
- Hands and markers. Facets should be sharp, polish should be bright, and the marker edges should not look cast from a soft mould.
- Strap and clasp. Thin leather and a stamped clasp are common. Good quality here means a thick strap with cut edges and a heavy clasp with clean engraving.
Movement choices
The 1908 has a solid caseback, so movement decoration is invisible once the watch is on your wrist. Spend your money where you can see it. What matters is that the movement is reliable and that the small seconds hand sweeps without a stutter or a wobble.
Three builds show up on the market: a basic 2824-type automatic driving a small-seconds module, a decorated movement with plates shaped to echo the 7140, and stock Chinese small-seconds calibres. Ask who repairs it if it stops. Nobody at a Rolex service centre will touch it.
Checklist before you pay
- Case width and height confirmed with calipers in a photo, not just a spec sheet.
- Subdial macro. Look for a real step, not a printed ring.
- Straight-on dial photo at 12 o'clock to check alignment of markers and the seconds hand.
- Movement name, service options, and a stated accuracy window.
- Strap thickness, edge finish, and clasp weight.
- Return policy in writing before money moves.
What it costs
Entry builds run from about $120 to $250, and that is where the thick case and flat subdial problems live. The mid tier, about $250 to $450, gets you a better case and dial. Above that you are paying for a movement and hand finishing, and the gains get small. Set your ceiling by how the dial looks in daylight, not by the number of features on a spec sheet.
One honest note
A replica is not a Rolex and will never be serviced by one. Resale is close to nothing, water resistance claims on cheap builds are optimistic at best, and if you swim with it you may regret it. Buy it because you want the look of a 39mm gold dress watch on your wrist, and treat the money as spent.
Bottom line
The 1908 52513 is a simple watch, and simple watches are hard to fake well because there is nowhere to hide. Check the case height, the subdial, and the printing. If all three hold up in photos, you have found a good one.
