Short answer
A replica Omega with "Co-Axial Chronometer" on the dial has a printed word on a dial. It does not have a certificate. The co-axial escapement is a real mechanism. Chronometer is a term tied to testing by an accredited lab. Replica watches get neither the movement nor the test file.
What a co-axial escapement is
George Daniels, a British watchmaker, designed the co-axial escapement and patented it in 1976. Omega licensed the design in 1999 and used it in the De Ville Co-Axial, caliber 2500. A standard lever escapement has two pallet stones. A co-axial escapement has three, set so the escape wheel teeth meet the pallet faces with less sliding. Less sliding means less lubricant breakdown at that contact point. Omega states the design holds rate longer between services.
What "chronometer" means
In Switzerland, chronometer means a movement tested and certified by COSC, the Controle Officiel Suisse des Chronometres. COSC tests a bare movement for 15 days in five positions at three temperatures. The pass band for mean daily rate is -4 to +6 seconds per day. Each passing movement gets its own number, and COSC keeps the record. In the US, "chronometer" has no federal definition for watches. On a dial with no lab file behind it, the word is marketing.
Master Chronometer is a second test
Omega started Master Chronometer certification in 2015 with METAS, the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology. METAS tests the cased watch, not a bare movement. Eight tests run for 10 days. Requirements include a daily rate of 0 to +5 seconds, function at 15,000 gauss, and checks on power reserve and water resistance. A Master Chronometer card carries a serial number that matches the watch.
What replicas are
- Movement: most replicas use mass-produced Asian or Swiss-parts movements, not Omega calibers 2500, 8500, or 8900.
- Certification: no COSC or METAS file exists for a replica serial number.
- Caseback: genuine Omega stamps the reference and serial into metal. Replicas print or acid-etch them.
- Law: 18 U.S.C. 2320 makes trafficking in counterfeit goods a federal crime, and US Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit watches on import.

- Read the caseback text. Reference and serial are engraved on genuine pieces.
