Short answer

The "P" in Luminor 1950 P points to the Panerai in-house movement families: P.3000, P.5000, P.9000, and P.9010. A replica Luminor 1950 with a P code copies three things: the 1950 cushion case, the crescent crown guard, and the 42 mm, 44 mm, or 47 mm case profile. No replica uses a real Panerai P.3000. Sellers fit a Seagull ST25, a modified ETA 7750, or a Chinese hand-wind clone. Case dimensions on the better replicas match the Panerai numbers. Movement finish and decoration do not.

Case sizes and lug widths

  • 42 mm: PAM 392. Lug width 22 mm.
  • 44 mm: PAM 312, PAM 320, PAM 328, PAM 359. Lug width 24 mm.
  • 47 mm: PAM 372, PAM 422, PAM 423. Lug width 26 mm.
  • Case thickness on the 44 mm automatic references sits near 16 mm.
  • Water resistance on the Panerai line is 100 m for most 1950 references, 300 m for a few.

Movement codes

P.3000: hand-wind, 160 parts, 21 jewels, 21,600 vph, 72-hour reserve. P.9000: automatic, 197 parts, 28 jewels, 28,800 vph, 72-hour reserve. P.5000: hand-wind, 8-day reserve. PAM 320 uses the P.9001, which is a P.9000 with a GMT module.

The code engraved on the case back of a replica is a print. It is not a build sheet.

Where replicas differ from Panerai

Case shape and dial layout come close on the top grade. Points that show the gap: crown guard bridge screws, dial lume tint, crown tube threading, and case back engraving depth. Panerai uses a lume compound that glows with a cream or pale green tint. Many replicas use a brighter mix. Panerai fits sapphire with an anti-reflective coating on some references. Replica crystals may have no coating at all.

Checks before buying

  1. Measure the lug width. A 44 mm case takes a 24 mm strap.
  2. Ask for the movement name. Ignore grade labels such as AAA or 1:1.
  3. Time the power reserve. A 72-hour claim that stops at 40 hours is a mismatch.
  4. Work the crown guard lever. It should snap down and lock the crown.
  5. Check the case back text against the reference number.

Legal position

A replica is not a Panerai. Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime in the United States under 18 U.S.C. 2320. Customs can seize a shipment. Panerai has not sold the P.3000 or P.9000 movement to a third party, so no replica can hold a real one.
