Short answer

A replica Lange mechanical watch is a copy of an A. Lange & Söhne model such as the Lange 1 or the Datograph. It runs on a mainspring, not a battery. Prices run from about $150 to $1,500. No replica matches the movement finishing or the case materials of the German original. Genuine Lange watches start near $40,000. The manufacturer builds about 5,000 to 6,000 pieces a year.

What A. Lange & Söhne is

Ferdinand Adolph Lange founded the workshop in Glashütte, Saxony, in 1845. The brand stopped production in 1948 and restarted in 1990 after German reunification. The Lange 1 arrived in 1994. The Datograph, a chronograph with a column wheel and a flyback function, arrived in 1999.

Every genuine Lange carries a three-quarter plate, screwed gold chatons, and a balance cock engraved by hand. The engraver's initials sit on the cock. Cases are gold or platinum in almost every reference.

Movement types in replicas

  • Quartz. Common in the cheapest tier. The seconds hand steps one tick per second.
  • Asian hand-wound and automatic clones. Seagull and Hangzhou bases appear here. Some add a big-date module.
  • Modified ETA or Sellita. Higher cost. The date function works on most of them.

A power reserve indicator on a replica is decorative in many builds. The pointer moves but does not track the mainspring.

The Lange 1 big date

The genuine outsize date uses two separate discs that jump at midnight. Copies use one printed disc behind a window, or two discs that drift out of alignment. Check the date at 11:55 p.m. if you can. Check the gap between the digits.

Materials and finishing

Replica cases are 316L stainless steel. Plating wears at the lugs and the caseback edge after months of daily wear. Sapphire crystal appears on mid and top tiers. Mineral glass appears on the bottom tier. Genuine Lange uses sapphire on both sides.

Price tiers

  • $150 to $300: quartz, mineral glass, plated case.
  • $300 to $800: Asian mechanical, sapphire, steel case.
  • $800 to $1,500: modified Swiss or high-grade Asian movement, closer case dimensions.

Legal status in the United States

Counterfeit goods carry the Lange name and logo. Trafficking them is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320. U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize shipments. Import for personal use is barred under 19 U.S.C. 1526. A watch sold as a "replica Lange" is a counterfeit, not a licensed copy.

What to inspect before buying

  1. Case diameter and thickness against the genuine spec.
  2. Lug width, so straps fit.
  3. Movement type and beat rate. Most Lange calibers run at 21,600 vph.
  4. Date change behavior at midnight.
  5. Weight. A gold Lange 1 weighs far more than a steel copy.
