The IW329160 belongs to the IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40 family, the 2023 revival of a Gérald Genta era design. Genuine specs are roughly 40mm across, about 10.7mm thick, 100m water resistant, in steel on an integrated H-link bracelet. A replica worth owning should sit under 11mm thick, wear like one solid piece of metal, and run a movement that hacks and hand-winds. If the bracelet rattles or the caseback sits proud of the case, skip it. Dial photos are cheap to fake. Case geometry is not.

What the real one is

Inside the genuine watch is IWC caliber 32111, a Sellita based automatic with a five day power reserve. That number matters here. No replica factory reproduces a 120 hour mainspring, so the power reserve you get is whatever the donor movement offers, thirty-eight to forty hours in most cases. The rest of the watch is where the money goes: a flat bezel with a brushed top and polished flank, brushed case sides, a sloped inner ring around the dial, and that bracelet.

Case and finishing

Start at the bezel. Replicas love to polish the whole surface because it hides tooling marks. On the real thing the top face is brushed and only the narrow side is polished.

  • Case sides: brushing should run one direction, crisp lines, no smeared or wavy grain.
  • Thickness: measure it. Anything near 12mm is a different case, usually built to swallow a thicker movement.
  • Crown guards: small, flowing out of the mid case, not glued on as a separate block.
  • Crown: screws down without grit, engraving is sharp rather than shallow.
  • Caseback: sits flush, no lip you can catch a fingernail under.

Bracelet and clasp

Integrated bracelets are the hardest thing to copy and the first thing experienced buyers squeeze. Grab the head and the tail and twist. A good one flexes as a unit with no side play at the end links. The H-link pattern should be crisp, the top surfaces brushed, the link edges softly broken, and the taper should feel gradual toward the clasp. Check the clasp in your hand: milled steel feels dense and the closure snaps; stamped steel feels light and the edges bite. Run a finger along the inside of the clasp. Sharp is bad.

Dial and hands

Applied indices should have polished flanks and lume filled level with the top, not domed over it. Look at the date window: the aperture edges should be chamfered and the date should sit centered, not floating high or low. The date changes near midnight, not at three in the afternoon. On the seconds hand, look for a clean counterweight and a sweep, not a stutter.

Movements you will find

  • Miyota 9015: 28,800 vph, hacks, hand winds, thin. Common in better builds.
  • Seiko NH35: 21,600 vph, tough and cheap, slightly thicker and a slower sweep.
  • Clone ETA 2824 or SW200: 28,800 vph, about 38 hours, good when it has been regulated.
  • Decorated plates stamped to look like a 32111: cosmetic. Nothing more.

Ask the seller which movement is inside. If the answer is vague, that tells you plenty.

Fast checks before you pay

  1. Ask for a video in daylight, both hands, crown operation included.
  2. Crown screws down smooth, winds with even resistance, no grinding.
  3. Caseback engraving and reference stamps match the paperwork.
  4. No gap between the first link and the case.
  5. Water resistance is a claim, not a fact. Treat any replica as splash resistant unless it has been pressure tested.

Price bands

Cheap tiers get you the silhouette and a hollow bracelet. Mid tiers fix the brushing and add a Miyota. The top tier is where thickness, taper, dial printing, and bracelet tolerance get close enough that you stop noticing them on the wrist. Pay for the bracelet fit, not for the box.

Bottom line

Buy the case and the bracelet. Movements can be swapped or serviced. Bad geometry never improves.
