What the term means
"Replica hippocampus 2016" is a search phrase for copies of Omega Seamaster watches from the 2016 model year. The hippocampus is the seahorse emblem Omega stamps on Seamaster casebacks. Sellers use the word in place of the brand name, because marketplaces filter listings that contain "Omega" or "Seamaster". The year narrows the search to references Omega catalogued in 2016.
The hippocampus emblem
Omega registered the Seamaster name in 1948. The hippocampus, a seahorse, appeared on Seamaster casebacks from the 1950s and remains the emblem of the line. Dive models with solid casebacks carry it as a relief stamp. Models with sapphire display backs show the movement instead, so the emblem sits on the rotor or the crystal edge on those references.
2016 Seamaster releases
Omega moved Master Chronometer certification into the Seamaster line in 2015 and 2016. The 2016 catalog held these references:
- Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M Master Chronometer, 43.5 mm and 39.5 mm, calibres 8900 and 8800.
- Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M Deep Black, 45.5 mm, calibre 8906 with GMT.
- Seamaster Aqua Terra Master Chronometer, 41 mm and 38.5 mm, calibres 8900 and 8800.
- Seamaster 300 Master Co-Axial, 41 mm, calibre 8400, carried over from 2014.
Master Chronometer means METAS certification after eight tests, including exposure to 15,000 gauss.
Why the year matters
Case size, bezel insert, dial text and bracelet changed between model years. A 2016 Planet Ocean 600M has a ceramic bezel with a Liquidmetal scale, a ceramic dial and arrow hands. The 2018 Seamaster Diver 300M moved to a 42 mm case and a wave dial. A listing that says 2016 points to the earlier case and dial layout.
Checks on a 2016-era replica
- Case diameter: 43.5 mm or 39.5 mm for Planet Ocean, 41 mm for Seamaster 300 and Aqua Terra.
- Lug width: 21 mm on the 43.5 mm Planet Ocean, 20 mm on the 41 mm Seamaster 300.
- Movement: most copies of this period used Asian clones of the ETA 2824 or 2836, or a 7750 clone for GMT models. None carry calibre 8900.
- Caseback: solid casebacks show a stamped hippocampus. A printed sticker or a shallow etch marks a low-grade copy.
- Crystal: domed sapphire with inner anti-reflective coating on the genuine watch. Many replicas use flat sapphire or mineral glass.
- Water resistance: the genuine Planet Ocean is rated to 600 m. Replicas are not pressure tested, and most reach 30 m to 50 m at best.
Legal status
Omega holds trademarks on the Seamaster name and the hippocampus emblem. Replica sales infringe those marks. US Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit imports under 19 U.S.C. 1526, and a buyer has no recourse if a parcel is held.
