What the term covers
A "replica Cartier Panthère Large" is a watch built to copy the Panthère de Cartier large model. It is not made by Cartier and not sold through Cartier. Cartier is owned by Richemont. The name, the case shape, and the dial are protected trademarks and design rights.
In the United States, trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2 million fine for an individual. Civil suits under the Lanham Act allow statutory damages up to $2,000,000 per counterfeit mark when the use is willful. US Customs and Border Protection can seize and destroy shipments.
The genuine large Panthère
Cartier released the Panthère de Cartier in 1983 and relaunched it in 2017. Most references use quartz movements. Cartier lists the large steel model at about 30 mm wide by 40 mm from lug to lug; figures differ by reference and by metal. Cases come in steel or 18k gold. The crown holds a blue spinel or sapphire cabochon. Water resistance is rated at 3 bar. The bracelet uses flat links and a hidden clasp.
Exact production numbers are not public. Current retail prices change by market and I could not verify them.
What replica listings show
Sellers describe the copy with the same case dimensions as the original and the same Roman numeral dial. Common gaps:
- Case metal. Genuine gold models weigh far more than gold-plated steel or brass copies.
- Movement. Copies use quartz or low-cost automatic movements. No maker publishes serial data for fakes, so a buyer cannot check them.
- Finish. Screw heads, bracelet link gaps, and dial printing are the usual tells.
- Papers. A copy has no Cartier warranty card, no service history, and no Richemont service support.
Replica prices run from about $50 to a few hundred dollars. Genuine large Panthère watches in steel sell for thousands on the secondhand market.
Risk
Customs seizures of counterfeit watches and jewelry are a standing category in CBP reports. The agency recorded about 19,000 counterfeit seizures in fiscal year 2023 across all product types. The OECD and EUIPO estimate counterfeit and pirated goods at 2.5 percent of world trade. A seized watch is destroyed. The buyer loses the money. Nothing is recovered.
Legal options
Pre-owned genuine Panthère watches sell through dealers and auction houses. Other quartz steel watches with a rectangular or square case sell at lower prices from established brands. Those carry a warranty and a resale value.
