The short answer
A replica Breguet worth owning costs roughly $250 to $700. Under $100 you are buying a quartz fashion watch with a French name on the dial. Above $700 you are paying for a real tourbillon or a gold-plated case, and the returns flatten fast. The good ones copy one specific reference: a Classique 5177, a Tradition, a Marine. The bad ones mash together elements from three models and hope you do not notice.
Why Breguet is a harder copy than Rolex
Rolex replicas got good because the volume justified the tooling. Breguet never had that volume. The brand is small, expensive, and its signature details are hand crafts that machines cannot fake cheaply. Engine-turned guilloché dials are cut on a rose engine, and a stamped imitation looks flat the moment light hits it at an angle. The hands are another giveaway: real Breguet hands are thin, blued, and end in a hollow eccentric moon tip. Replica hands are often too thick or filled in solid. Check the fluting on the caseband too. Real coin-edge fluting is cut, not cast, and it catches your thumbnail.
Breguet also hides a secret signature on the dial, a small mark that appears only at certain angles. Most replicas skip it. The ones that include it tend to print it too large or in the wrong spot.
Movement tiers you will run into
- Quartz. Runs fine, feels wrong in the hand, no sweeping seconds.
- Cheap automatic, often a Miyota or a generic Chinese caliber. Acceptable beat rate, rough finishing.
- Clone ETA 2824 or 2892. This is the sweet spot for a Classique copy, and an independent watchmaker can service it.
- Real tourbillon, usually a Seagull-based carriage. Genuinely rotating, genuinely fragile, expensive to repair.
A "tourbillon" that ticks once per second is not a tourbillon. It is a decorated open heart. Ask for a video before you pay.
What I check before buying
- Dial printing under a loupe. Fuzzy edges mean a cheap pad print.
- Hand shape and color. Blued steel should read dark blue, not painted bright blue.
- Crown action. Gritty winding on an automatic is a bad sign.
- Caseback engraving depth and font. Shallow laser etching is common.
- Lug fit and end link gaps on bracelet models.
- Water resistance claims. Treat "50m" on a replica as splash resistance and nothing more.
The parts nobody likes to say out loud
No replica is a Breguet. It will not hold value, Breguet will not service it, and any watchmaker who opens the case can tell in under a minute. Importing counterfeit goods into the United States is illegal, and customs can seize a shipment with no compensation. Selling one as genuine is a crime in most places.
