Short answer
A watch sold as a "replica IWC Ingenieur IW3220" is a counterfeit. IWC does not make it, does not sell it, and does not service it. Importing or selling counterfeit watches is illegal in the United States and in most other countries. The item keeps no resale value.
The genuine reference
IW3220 is a reference number inside the IWC Ingenieur line. The Ingenieur started in 1955 as an antimagnetic watch for engineers and laboratories. Gérald Genta redesigned it in 1976 as reference 1832. IWC relaunched the line in 2005, and reference numbers in the 3220 group cover stainless steel automatic models from that period. Case sizes and production years differ between variants. IWC publishes the full specification for each reference on its own site. Details I cannot confirm are left out here.
Counterfeit against genuine
- Movement: IWC uses its own calibres. Counterfeits use generic or copied movements from other suppliers.
- Case and bracelet: IWC uses grade-specific steel with hand finishing. Counterfeit cases use lower-grade alloys and plating that wears through.
- Dial and hands: print thickness, lume application and hand polishing differ.
- Numbers: reference and serial numbers follow a set IWC format. Counterfeit numbers do not match any IWC record.
- Papers: IWC ships a warranty card tied to the serial number. Counterfeit sets use copied cards.
Legal exposure
Counterfeit watches infringe registered trademarks. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit goods at the border and destroys them. A buyer can lose both the watch and the money paid. A seller faces civil claims and, in some cases, criminal charges.
Cost of ownership
IWC services genuine watches and supplies parts for them. No IWC service center accepts a counterfeit. Independent watchmakers often refuse the work because parts do not exist. On the secondhand market the counterfeit holds no value.
Buying a genuine IW3220
Buy from an authorized dealer, or from a seller with a documented service history. Ask for the reference number, the serial number and the service papers. Have a watchmaker inspect the watch before payment. Check the reference against the specification IWC publishes.
