A fake Audemars Piguet Royal Oak gives itself away in one of four places: the dial texture, the case bevels, the bracelet finishing, or the movement. Work through them in that order. The dial is the hardest part to copy and the fastest thing to inspect, so start there. If the dial is wrong, stop and walk away.

Step 1: Read the Dial

  1. Tilt the watch under angled light and look across the dial at a shallow angle rather than straight on.
  2. Compare the tapisserie squares against a known genuine photo. Real dials have raised blocks that flash on top and go dark on the sides.
  3. Check the depth of the grid pattern. Copies usually stamp or print a shallow pattern that reads flat and even across the whole dial.
  4. Study the applied AP logo with the loupe. Genuine logos have crisp polished edges and tight, even spacing.
  5. Examine the date window aperture. Genuine windows are cut to match the numerals with a beveled inner edge; fakes leave a sharp square hole with gaps.
  6. Compare the date font to the reference. Genuine numerals are thin and match the dial printing weight.
  7. Inspect the hand finish. You want satin tops, polished bevels, and no burrs or machining marks.

Step 2: Measure the Case

  1. Measure the case diameter with calipers and compare it to the official reference spec.
  2. Measure case thickness at the center. Many replicas run noticeably thicker because the movement is deeper than the real caliber.
  3. Run your fingernail along the case flank to feel the bevel. Genuine cases have a soft, continuous chamfer; fakes often have a blunt or uneven edge.
  4. Count the eight bezel screws and check that they sit nearly flush with the bezel surface.
  5. Look at the screw slot angles from directly above. Genuine examples show a deliberate, consistent pattern; replicas often sit at random angles and stand proud of the bezel.
  6. Check the crown and pushers for correct proportions and a clean polished finish.

Step 3: Inspect the Bracelet

  1. Feel the outer link edges with your thumb. Genuine links are rounded and soft; copies often feel square and sharp.
  2. Look at the top surface of each link under the loupe. Genuine links carry brushed tops with polished edges that follow the link shape.
  3. Check the taper from case to clasp against reference photos.
  4. Inspect the link screws for a flush fit and a clean slot.
  5. Read the clasp engraving. The logo and text should be deep, sharp, and centered.

Step 4: Examine the Movement and Caseback

  1. Turn the watch over and check the depth and sharpness of the caseback engravings.
  2. Compare the font of the reference and serial numbers against genuine photos.
  3. View the movement through a display back. Look for clean Geneva stripes, a finished rotor, and polished screw heads.
  4. Wind the crown and feel for resistance. A rough, gritty feel points to a low-grade movement.
  5. Watch the seconds hand for a smooth sweep rather than a visible tick.

Step 5: Verify the Numbers and Paperwork

  1. Write down the reference number and serial number exactly as engraved.
  2. Ask the seller for a service record, box, and original papers.
  3. Check the printing quality on the warranty card and booklet. Blurry type and mismatched fonts are common on replica paperwork.
  4. Take the watch to an authorized dealer or certified watchmaker to have the caseback opened and the movement identified.
  5. Request the serial check through an official Audemars Piguet boutique or service center before you pay.

Automatic Rejection Signs

  • Dial texture looks printed, glossy, or uniform
  • Screws at random angles or standing above the bezel
  • Case thickness outside the published spec
  • Sharp bracelet edges and an unfinished clasp
  • Serial or reference number that does not match the seller's paperwork

No photo set or online checklist replaces a hands-on inspection. If the seller refuses to let a watchmaker open the case, treat the watch as a fake and end the deal.
