Short answer
A fake Villeret moon phase is a counterfeit copy of a Blancpain Villeret. The genuine watch is the Quantième Complet, calibre 6654. Two checks separate the two. First, the moon aperture at 6 o'clock. On a real moon phase the disc advances one step per day and finishes a full cycle in 29.5 days. Many counterfeits fit a 24-hour day/night disc that looks the same. Second, the movement. Real watches use an in-house calibre with a gold rotor. Fakes use a third-party automatic movement with a bolt-on module.

Test the moon aperture in one hour
Photograph the moon opening. Wait 60 minutes. Photograph it again.
A true moon phase disc moves about 6 degrees per day, or 0.25 degrees per hour. The moon stays in the same spot. A 24-hour day/night disc moves 15 degrees per hour. The moon shifts across the opening in a visible way. This test costs nothing and needs no tools.
Some higher-priced counterfeits do carry a real 29.5-day module. The test will not catch those. Move to the dial and movement checks.
Dial and case checks
- Moon disc. Genuine discs are dark blue with a painted star field and two moon faces. Many fakes print a single moon on a flat navy plate.
- Date hand. Genuine is thin and blued with a red tip. Fakes use a painted flat hand or a printed mark.
- Windows. Edges are cut clean on the real dial. Fake dials show burrs and uneven corners.
- Wordmark. Letter spacing and serif shape differ on most fakes. Comparison photos help.
- Corrector pins. Real watches use recessed pins on the case flank that need a tool. Many fakes use raised buttons that a finger can press.
- Case finishing. Lugs are polished on the top face and brushed on the sides. Fakes polish everything or brush everything.
Movement checks
- Rotor. Genuine calibre 6654 has a gold rotor with a honeycomb guilloché pattern and an engraved signature. Fakes use a plain brass rotor with laser etching or a sticker.
- Bridges. Real bridges carry Côtes de Genève stripes and chamfered edges. Fake bridges show shallow stamped lines.
- Jewels and screws. Count the jewels in photos. Many fakes run on a 25-jewel 2824 clone or a Miyota 9015 base.
- Balance. Real watches run at 4 Hz. A timegrapher reading of 21,600 vibrations per hour points to a lower-grade movement.

US boutique prices sit near $15,000 for steel and near $26,000 for red gold. Prices move with the year and the exchange rate. Counterfeits sell for $90 to $500. Sellers who use the term super clone ask $600 and up. No genuine Villeret moon phase sells under $5,000 on the used market.
What is not known
Blancpain does not publish production numbers, so the share of fakes in the market has no figure. No public database lists which counterfeit factories build a working 29.5-day module. Swiss customs seizure reports cover counterfeit watches in total, not by brand or model.
