Short answer
A fake Type XXI is a counterfeit copy of the Breguet Type XXI pilot chronograph. Breguet delivered the first Type XX watches to the French armed forces in the 1950s. The Type XXI arrived in 1995 with a 24-hour subdial and a date. Counterfeits copy the case shape and the dial text. They do not copy the movement, the hand finish, or the caseback engraving.
Which references get faked
Most fakes copy the Type XXI 3810 and the Type XXI 3817. Both use a 42 mm case. Both come in steel or gold. A genuine steel Type XXI sits in the low five figures in USD at retail. Used examples trade lower. Counterfeits sell for a few hundred dollars. A price under 10 percent of the used market is the first signal.
Checks, in order
- Caseback. Breguet engraves the reference number and a case serial. Fakes reuse one serial across batches and stamp the text shallow. Compare the font to a photo of the same reference from Breguet.
- 24-hour subdial. The Type XXI carries a 24-hour indicator, not a second 12-hour counter. On a genuine watch the hand tracks the hour hand and reads one full day per turn. Many fakes run that hand off a 12-hour gear or leave it fixed.
- Movement. Breguet publishes a calibre number, jewel count, and power reserve for each reference. The Type XXI 3817 uses calibre 584Q/1, a flyback chronograph with automatic winding. Some references have a sapphire caseback and some have a solid one, so check the spec sheet for the reference in front of you. If the back is solid and the seller refuses to open the watch, stop.
- Chronograph action. Start, stop, and reset the chronograph. Pushers on a genuine flyback watch have short travel and a firm stop. Reset snaps back to zero. Sticky pushers and a slow reset point to a Valjoux 7750 clone or a cheaper module.
- Dial print. Look at the Breguet script, the numerals, and the Swiss made line at 6 o'clock. Fakes show thick strokes, uneven spacing, and a flat finish. Genuine dials use applied markers with polished edges.
- Caseband and crown. The Type XXI line uses a fluted caseband. The cuts are spaced and polished. Fakes cut them shallow. The crown carries the Breguet logo, and stamped logos look soft.
- Papers and box. Counterfeit sets ship with copied warranty cards. A card with no dealer name, no date, and no matching serial is a problem.
Where to verify
Counterfeit production changes by batch. No single flaw proves a watch is fake, and no single photo proves it is real. Breguet boutiques and authorized service centers can verify a serial number and a service record. Get that check before you pay.
