Buy the hand-wound replica built on a Seagull ST19 movement, priced $250 to $400. It is the only tier under $500 that puts the subdials in the right place. Subdial layout is the hardest thing to fake, so it should drive the choice.
The genuine Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch runs a 42 mm case, a 20 mm lug width, and a hand-wound calibre at 21,600 vph. Omega fits the 1861 with 18 jewels, or the 3861 with 26 jewels and a 50 hour power reserve. Both use the same dial: 30 minute counter at 3, 12 hour counter at 6, running seconds at 9.

Why the ST19 Wins
The ST19 is a column wheel chronograph that beats at 21,600 vph. It has no date, no 24 hour hand, and no extra pusher. That lets the dial keep three subdials at 3, 6, and 9 with correct spacing. Most watches in this tier run 42 mm wide and 20 mm at the lugs.
Option 2: Quartz Tier at $80 to $150
Quartz copies sell on looks alone. Many use a battery movement with a sweeping hand that ticks once per second. Subdials on this tier often run as day, date, and 24 hour readouts instead of chronograph counters. Case thickness lands near 12 mm to 13 mm, thinner than the 14 mm of the 1861. It is a costume piece.
Option 3: 7750 Tier at $400 to $700
Automatic copies based on a Valjoux 7750 run 28,800 vph. The 7750 has subdials at 12, 9, and 6. Builders move them, and the spacing ends up wide. Many 7750 dials add a date window at 4:30. The Moonwatch has never had a date window at 4:30.
Tells to Check on Any Example
- Subdial spacing. Compare the gap between the 3 and 6 counters against a photo of a real reference.
- Bezel text. Pre-1970 references use a dot over 90. Later references use a dot next to 90 and a diagonal above it.
- Crystal. The standard model uses a domed hesalite crystal. Sapphire sandwich models show the movement through a display back.
- Caseback. The 1861 and 3861 Moonwatch use a solid steel back with the Seahorse medallion, unless it is the sapphire version.
- Pushers. Two pushers at 2 and 4, one crown at 3, nothing else.
