Used genuine examples sell for five figures. No replica uses solid gold. The case metal alone rules it out.
The real reference 116655
Rolex launched the 116655 in 2015. The reference retired in 2019 when the 126655 replaced it.
- Case: 40 mm, 18 ct Everose gold. Everose is a Rolex alloy of gold, copper, and a small amount of platinum. The platinum slows the color shift that affects standard rose gold.

The Oysterflex detail
The Oysterflex is the part replicas miss most. The real strap has an alloy core that grips the wrist and holds the shape of the case. Copies use rubber over a thin steel strip, or plain rubber with no core. The ribbed matte finish on the real strap is molded, and the edges sit flat against the case.
What replica versions get right and wrong
Shape and size are the easy parts. A copy can match a 40 mm case, a 20 mm lug width, and the bezel profile. Metals are the hard part. Gold alloy has a density near 15 g/cm3. Stainless steel sits near 7.9 g/cm3. A plated steel case cannot match the weight or the color depth of solid Everose. Gold plating also thins at the lugs, crown guards, and clasp within months of daily wear.
Movements are the second gap. Copies in the $300 to $600 range use Asian clones of an ETA 2824 or a basic automatic. Copies at the top end claim a clone of the 3135. Most of these run at 21,600 vph against the real 28,800 vph, and the winding rotors are loud. A watchmaker with a timing machine can measure this in two minutes.
Tell signs on a fake 116655
- Caseback edge engraved "116655". Rolex marks the reference between the lugs, not on the back.
- Glass display back. The 116655 is solid.
- Light weight. Hold a real gold watch once and the difference is plain.
- Bezel numerals painted or recessed. Real Cerachrom numerals are raised and polished.
- Cyclops magnification below 2.5x, with visible glue at the edge.
- Plain rubber strap with no alloy core.
- Lume that glows green, or fades in under an hour. Chromalight glows blue.
- Full set with box and papers at a price far below the market. That is the strongest single sign.
Price bands in the replica market
- Under $200: quartz or a low-grade automatic, gold plating, wrong case proportions.
- $300 to $600: Asian 2824 clone, better dial printing, still plated steel.
- $800 to $1,500: super clone claims, 3135 clone, closer dimensions, still not gold.
Price does not change the material problem. No replica at any price has a solid Everose case.
Legal status in the United States
Selling or importing a counterfeit watch is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320. A first trafficking offense carries up to 10 years in prison. A second offense carries up to 20 years. Brand owners can also sue for civil damages without proving intent, and CBP can seize counterfeit shipments at the border. Buying a counterfeit for personal use is not a federal crime in most cases, but possession gives no protection if you resell it, and marketplaces and employers treat it as a policy violation.
