Short answer
A steel fake Rolex Daytona copies reference 116500LN or 126500LN. Genuine ones measure 40 mm across, use Oystersteel, and run cal. 4130 with a 72-hour power reserve. Fakes sell for $100 to $1,500. Selling one in the US is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320, with a first-offense maximum of 10 years in prison.
Which Daytona gets copied
Rolex has built steel Daytona chronographs since 1963. The modern targets are:
- 116520, 2000 to 2016. Steel bezel, Zenith-based cal. 4030 to 2000, then cal. 4130.
- 116500LN, 2016 to 2023. Black Cerachrom bezel, white or black dial.
- 126500LN, 2023 to now. Slimmer bezel ring, same 40 mm case, cal. 4130.
The white dial version is called the Panda. Both dial colors use the same case and bracelet.
Genuine specs to compare
- Case: 40 mm diameter, Oystersteel. Rolex does not publish case thickness.
- Movement: cal. 4130, automatic, column wheel, vertical clutch, 28,800 vph, 72-hour reserve.
- Counters: small seconds at 6, 30-minute at 3, 12-hour at 9.
- Pushers: screw down. Crown: screw down, Triplock.
- Bezel: black ceramic with engraved and filled numerals.
- Weight on a full Oyster bracelet: about 140 g.
- Retail for the 126500LN at US authorized dealers: about $15,000.
Where fakes fail inspection
Most steel fakes share the same faults.
- Bezel fill. Fakes print numerals or use a decal. The print fades and the edges smear.
- Movement. Many fakes use a Valjoux 7750 base or a Chinese clone of cal. 4130. A 7750 has subdials at 12, 9 and 6. The Daytona layout is 3, 6 and 9. A counter at 12 is a tell.
- Weight. Fakes use 316L steel and hollow bracelets. Weights land 20 to 40 g below real.
- Case back and lugs. Engraved reference numbers sit between the lugs at 12. Font weight and depth vary on fakes.
- Price. A genuine steel Daytona trades above retail on the secondary market. Any complete watch under $8,000 with paperwork is not genuine.
US legal facts
18 U.S.C. § 2320 covers trafficking in counterfeit goods. A first offense carries up to 10 years and a $2 million fine for an individual. 15 U.S.C. § 1114 gives Rolex a civil claim. US Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit watches at ports and in international mail. CBP lists watches and jewelry among the top seized categories by value.
There is no personal-use exemption for counterfeit marks. A single fake in a suitcase can be seized and destroyed.
Marketplaces and resale
eBay, Chrono24 and Amazon ban counterfeit listings. Chrono24 runs an authenticity check above a set value. A seller who lists a fake can lose the account and face a claim under state fraud laws.
What is not known
Rolex does not publish production numbers for the Daytona, so no one can state how many steel pieces leave the factory each year. Published fake-versus-real weight tables also vary, because case and bracelet suppliers change between batches.
