Weight is the hard part
Platinum has a density of 21.45 g/cm3. Type 316L stainless steel has a density of 7.9 g/cm3. The same case shape in platinum weighs about 2.7 times as much. A copy in steel does not feel close in the hand. Some sellers use tungsten heavy alloy, which has a density of 17 to 18.5 g/cm3. That is heavier than steel and closer to platinum, but the metal is still not platinum. The raw platinum for one case and bracelet costs more than the finished replica sells for.

Checks before you pay
- Dial color. Ice blue is pale with a gray lean. Copies drift toward a flat baby blue.
- Bezel insert. The brown should read chestnut. Engraved numerals should be filled and level.
- Subdial layout. The 4130 has subdials at 3, 6 and 9. A copy built on a Valjoux 7750 has them at 12, 6 and 9.
- Movement. Ask for the calibre name. Clone 4130 movements exist. A 7750 copy costs less and has a different pusher feel.
