Answer

A fake Rolex Daytona black dial is a counterfeit copy of the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ref. 116500LN. Rolex introduced that reference in 2016. It has a black dial, silver-rimmed counters, and a black Cerachrom ceramic bezel. Genuine specs: 40 mm Oystersteel case, caliber 4130 automatic movement, 72-hour power reserve, 100 m water resistance, sapphire crystal, Oyster bracelet. Replica copies sell from about $50 to $1,500. No replica uses a Rolex caliber 4130. U.S. law bans import, sale, and trafficking of counterfeit watches.

Genuine ref. 116500LN specs

  • Case: 40 mm Oystersteel, screw-down crown, screw-down pushers
  • Bezel: black Cerachrom ceramic insert, tachymeter scale, numerals filled with platinum
  • Dial: black lacquer, three subdials at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock, silver ring accents
  • Movement: Rolex caliber 4130, automatic, column wheel, vertical clutch, 44 jewels
  • Frequency: 28,800 vph (4 Hz)
  • Power reserve: 72 hours
  • Water resistance: 100 m
  • Crystal: sapphire, 2.5x Cyclops lens over the date at 3 o'clock
  • Bracelet: Oyster, Oysterlock clasp, Easylink extension
  • Weight: about 134 g with a full bracelet
  • Lug width: 20 mm

U.S. retail in 2023 was $15,100. Rolex replaced the ref. 116500LN with the ref. 126500LN in 2023. The newer reference uses caliber 4131 and keeps the 72-hour reserve.

Replica price bands

Three groups.

  • $50 to $150: quartz or low-grade automatic. Plated brass case. Painted subdials. No chronograph function.
  • $200 to $500: Asian automatic, often a Seagull ST19 or a copy of the A7750. Working chronograph. 316L steel case. Weak water seals.
  • $600 to $1,500: builds with a copy of the 4130 layout. Closer weight and dial print. Still not a Rolex movement.

Six checks on a black dial Daytona

  1. Subdials. Genuine caliber 4130 runs all three counters plus the chronograph seconds. Many fakes leave the 6 o'clock subdial dead or run it as a 24-hour hand.
  2. Dial print. Genuine "ROLEX" and "COSMOGRAPH" use tight letter spacing. Fakes show wide, thick, or uneven text. The coronet has five points and even arm lengths.
  3. Bezel. Genuine Cerachrom is black ceramic with etched numerals filled with platinum. Fakes use coated steel, aluminum, or ceramic with painted or shallow numerals.
  4. Crystal and cyclops. Genuine magnification is 2.5x. A fake cyclops shows 1.5x to 2x, or an air gap under the lens.
  5. Case and pushers. Genuine pushers sit at equal height with clean threads. Fake crown guards look thicker or shorter. Genuine lug width is 20 mm.
  6. Movement and caseback. Genuine caliber 4130 has a column wheel and a 72-hour reserve. A power reserve under 48 hours points to a copy. The caseback is solid on the genuine watch.

Additional marks: hand stack height, rehaut engraving depth, bracelet screw fit, clasp stamp, and lume color. A postal scale helps. Genuine ref. 116500LN weighs about 134 g. A plated brass fake often comes in under 110 g.

Common faults in replica Daytona black dials

  • Chronograph seconds hand fails to return to 12 o'clock.
  • Pushers stick or need high force.
  • Rotor noise under light wrist movement.
  • Water resistance fails at 30 m in a pressure test.
  • Subdial hand alignment off by one or two minutes.
  • Date wheel font and window bevel differ from the genuine part.

U.S. law and import rules

Counterfeit watches are illegal in the United States. Three points matter.

  • 18 U.S.C. § 2320 makes trafficking in counterfeit goods a federal crime. A first offense by an individual carries up to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $2,000,000.
  • 19 U.S.C. § 1526 lets U.S. Customs and Border Protection seize and destroy goods with counterfeit marks. The personal-use exception does not apply to counterfeit items.
  • Rolex S.A. holds U.S. trademark registrations for the name, coronet, and design elements. Unauthorized use is infringement.

This is general information, not legal advice.
