You get a 40mm Oyster case in 18k yellow gold, a black Cerachrom bezel with numerals filled in yellow gold, and a black dial with golden counters. The movement is the in-house caliber 4131, an automatic with a 72 hour power reserve and a Chronergy escapement. Retail sits in the mid $40,000s, and gray market prices have run above that. If a listing claims solid gold and asks four figures, it is a replica, not a bargain.

Where good replicas get close

The dial is where the current crop of fakes wins the most ground. Subdial spacing, the COSMOGRAPH and DAYTONA print, the coronet, and the rehaut engravings are all close enough that a quick glance will not catch them. Case profile and crown guards have improved too, and Oysterflex copies look right from a normal distance. Oysterflex straps come in lettered sizes, and a strap that is one size off will make the watch slide or pinch. Gold also scratches, and a plated case can lose color on the clasp where it rubs a desk, so plan for that if you wear it daily.

A fake will never be a 126518 in the ways a collector cares about, so buy it for what it is and nothing more. If you want the real reference, go through an authorized dealer or a trusted pre-owned seller, and insist on the card and service history with the watch.
