Rolex builds the 1908 with a small seconds hand at 6 o'clock. There is no central seconds version. A listing that advertises a "fake Rolex 1908 central second" offers a replica whose dial does not copy the real watch. On a genuine 1908 the seconds hand sits inside a subdial above the 6 o'clock marker.

Rolex lists the 1908 case at 50 m of water resistance. The model launched in 2023. Rolex ended the Cellini line in the same year.
Why a central seconds replica exists
Most replica 1908 watches use a center-seconds movement. Common donors are the ETA 2824-2 and its clones, the Miyota 9015 and the Seagull ST21. These movements drive the seconds hand from the center of the dial. A small seconds layout needs an added module or a different gear train, which adds cost and parts.
A builder who skips the subdial keeps the cheaper movement and prints a fake subdial ring on the dial. On some units the ring is real but carries no hand.
What to check on a replica
- Subdial: the ring must sit between the center and the 6 o'clock marker. A central seconds hand is the first sign of a wrong dial.
- Hand length: the seconds hand reaches the minute track of the subdial, not the outer track.
- Case size: 39 mm across, without the crown. Measure with calipers if you can.
- Movement: ask for a photo through the caseback. The genuine calibre 7140 has a decorated rotor and striped bridges. No replica matches that finish.
- Weight: solid 18k gold cases run heavy. A replica in steel or plated brass feels light.
- Date: the 1908 has no date window. Any 1908 with a date is wrong.
Movement options in the replica market
- Miyota 9015 or ETA 2824 clone: center seconds, about 40 hours of power reserve, 28,800 beats an hour
- Automatic with a small seconds module: less common, higher cost
- Quartz: cheapest, seconds hand ticks once a second
A ticking seconds hand points to quartz. The genuine watch beats at 28,800 vibrations an hour, or 8 steps a second.
Price
Replica listings for the 1908 run from under $100 to several hundred dollars. There is no standard price. Price tracks the movement and the case metal, not the dial. A center-seconds build sits at the low end.
Legal note
Counterfeit watches are illegal to sell or import in the United States. 18 U.S.C. 2320 sets prison terms of up to 10 years for trafficking in counterfeit goods. US Customs can seize a shipment and destroy it. A buyer who orders a fake 1908 risks losing both the money and the watch.
