A fake Reverso Tribute Duo is a counterfeit copy of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Duoface. The genuine watch has a rectangular case that slides and flips on a carriage, with a second dial and a second time zone on the back. Counterfeits copy the outline and the two-sided layout. What the genuine watch is
Jaeger-LeCoultre introduced the Reverso in 1931 for polo players. The case rotates 180 degrees on a track so the dial faces inward during a match. The Duoface version adds a second dial on the back with a second time zone, run by one movement. The Tribute line uses a 1931-style dial with applied numerals and a railway minute track. Genuine examples come from the JLC manufacture in Le Sentier, Switzerland. JLC publishes case dimensions and calibre numbers per reference.
What separates a counterfeit from the real watch
- Movement. Duoface Reversos use an in-house JLC calibre. The second time zone links to a 24-hour day and night disc that tracks the hour hand. Copies use a bought-in movement and a printed disc that does not move with the hour hand.
- Case engraving. Genuine casebacks carry deep engraving with a reference number, a serial number, and the maker name. Fake engraving is shallow and laser-etched.
- Dial finishing. Genuine dials show a fine grain, applied numerals with polished edges, and heat-blued hands. Copies show flat printing and glue at the base of the markers.
- The flip. A genuine carriage slides and flips with one push and stops at 180 degrees. Wobble and loose tolerances point to a copy.
- Strap and buckle. Genuine straps are signed and the buckle carries the maker mark. Most counterfeits ship with an unbranded strap and a plain buckle.
Price and paperwork
Retail prices for steel Reverso Tribute Duoface references sit above $10,000 USD. Second-hand prices depend on reference, box, and papers. A seller who offers a new Duoface far below market, or who cannot show a receipt from an authorized dealer, is selling a counterfeit. Counterfeit watches are illegal to import into the United States. CBP seizes them. Buyers of counterfeits get no warranty, no service path, and no parts support from JLC.
How to check one
- Ask for photos of both dials, the caseback engraving, and the movement.
- Compare the reference number on the caseback against the JLC catalog for that model.
- Check the service record. JLC service centers keep a file per serial number.
- Have JLC or an authorized watchmaker open the case. The calibre number and the movement finish settle the question.
No public list exists of every counterfeit reference. If a serial number cannot be confirmed with JLC, treat the watch as a copy.
