Quick answer

A fake Reine de Naples tourbillon is a copy of a Breguet oval watch. Genuine tourbillon versions sell for six figures in US dollars. Replicas sell from about $300 to $1,500. Most watches sold as "tourbillon" replicas do not contain a tourbillon. They contain an open aperture with a balance wheel that swings but does not rotate. Ask for a video of the movement through the caseback before payment.

The original watch

Breguet made an oval wristwatch for Caroline Murat, Queen of Naples. Records date the order to 1810 and delivery to 1812. The case was oval and the movement repeated the hours. Breguet brought the shape back in 2002 as a collection.

Reine de Naples cases measure about 36.5 mm by 28.5 mm on several references. Dials use mother-of-pearl, guilloche, or enamel. Tourbillon references place the carriage at 6 o'clock and add diamond-set bezels and lugs. Gold, gems, and hand finishing push the retail price into five and six figures.

How replica tourbillons are built

Real tourbillon carriage

A small number of replica makers fit a Chinese tourbillon movement. The carriage holds the balance and escapement and turns one full revolution per minute. These watches cost more than standard replicas. The carriage shape and bridge finish will not match Breguet's. Expect a different beat rate and a shorter power reserve, often 40 hours or less.

Fake tourbillon aperture

Most replicas use a standard automatic movement. The dial has an opening with a balance wheel or a decorative disc. The part moves back and forth. It does not complete a circle each minute. Some add a printed "Tourbillon" label. The caseback shows a rotor, not a carriage.

Checks before buying

  1. Ask for a 60-second video of the open caseback. The carriage must complete one full turn.
  2. Ask the case size. A round case is not a Reine de Naples copy.
  3. Check the dial for real mother-of-pearl. It shifts color with the angle. Printed foil does not.
  4. Weigh the watch. Plated cases feel light against steel of the same size.
  5. Check the crown. Breguet sets the crown at 4 o'clock on this line.
  6. Ask the movement name. A seller who cannot name it does not know the watch.

Price bands

  • $80 to $200: quartz or basic automatic, no tourbillon, plated case.
  • $250 to $600: automatic with decorated bridges, fake tourbillon aperture.
  • $700 to $1,500: Chinese tourbillon movement, steel or plated case, better dial.
  • Above $2,000: hard to justify. The gap to a used Swiss watch narrows.

What no replica copies

Breguet finishes movements by hand. Bridges get chamfered edges and polished screws. The Reine de Naples dial uses guilloche cut on a rose engine. Replicas use stamped or printed patterns. Serial numbers and Breguet hallmarks are laser etched on replicas, not engraved. Resale value sits near zero.

One limit: we cannot verify which replica factories currently produce a true tourbillon in this shape. Photos and movement names change by batch. Treat any listing without a movement video as unverified.
