The short answer

Most listings for a "fake Portugieser 39mm" are selling a replica of the IWC Portugieser line built to a case size somewhere between 39mm and 40.5mm. There is no single 39mm Portugieser in the IWC catalog. The Portugieser Automatic 40 (ref. 3583) measures 40.4mm across, and the current Portugieser Chronograph (ref. 3716) is 41mm. Older chronograph references sat just under 41mm. So a seller who says 39mm is rounding, measuring the case without the crown, or repeating a supplier sheet that was never precise.

That number matters less than three things: the movement, the dial printing, and the case profile. Get those right and the watch reads correctly on the wrist. Get them wrong and no amount of case-size accuracy saves it.

Why the 39mm label exists

Replica factories follow the same size logic as the brands. A smaller case fits more wrists and costs less to machine, so mid-size versions of popular models tend to appear first. The Portugieser is a big-watch design by history, with the original 1930s piece built around a pocket watch movement. Slimming it into a 39mm class copy is a compromise, and it changes the proportions you see in photos.

I look at lug-to-lug before diameter. A 39mm case with 48mm lugs wears larger than a 40mm case with 46mm lugs. Sellers rarely publish lug-to-lug, so ask for it.

Movement is where the money goes

Three tiers show up in this size class. A basic automatic, often a Miyota 9015 or a Seagull ST series, is the entry point. It keeps time, hacks, and hand-winds, but rotor noise and beat rate give it away to anyone who handles the watch. A decorated clone aimed at looking like the IWC 82-series calibre is the middle tier. The finishing looks right through a display back, and the bridges carry plausible engraving. The top tier uses a modified Swiss or high-grade Japanese base with better regulation and a smoother winding feel.

Ask which movement, and ask for a photo of the back. If the answer is vague, that is your answer.

Dial and case details to check

  • Applied numerals should sit level and catch light along one clean edge. Painted or badly glued indices look flat and sit crooked.
  • The rail track and subdial printing need to be crisp under magnification. Blurry printing is the most common flaw at this price.
  • Leaf hands on a Portugieser should be thin and tapered. Fat hands ruin the whole look.
  • Case finishing should alternate brushed sides with polished bevels. Cheap copies polish everything, which reads as soft and shapeless.
  • The crown should be signed and should not wobble on the stem.
  • Crystal height matters. A domed sapphire that sits proud of the bezel looks wrong in profile.

Wrist fit and the strap

At 39mm to 40mm, a Portugieser copy suits wrists from about 6.25 inches upward. Below that it still sits fine because the lugs curve down, but the dial can dominate your arm. Strap quality changes the feel more than people expect. Most replicas ship with stiff leather that never breaks in. Budget for a replacement in 20mm or 21mm, depending on the lugs, and the watch will feel like a different object.

Price bands

Entry copies in this size run from about $120 to $250. Mid-tier versions with a decorated clone movement land between $250 and $450. The top tier, with better finishing and a stronger movement, goes past $500. Anything far below the entry band is usually a quartz watch in a mechanical costume.

Before you pay

  1. Ask for the measured diameter and lug-to-lug, not the catalog figure.
  2. Request real photos, not factory renders.
  3. Confirm the movement name and whether it hacks.
  4. Get the return policy in writing.
  5. Pay with a method that carries buyer protection.

What it will not do

A replica will not hold value, will not be serviced by IWC, and will not fool a dealer who opens the case back. If those things matter, the sensible move is a used Portugieser from a reputable seller, or a similarly sized watch from a brand that makes its own movements at that price. If you want the look on a budget and you know what you are buying, a well-chosen 39mm to 40mm copy does deliver the silhouette. Buy it for the silhouette, not for the badge.
