Quick answer

A real Seamaster 300 Master Chronometer carries METAS certification. Copies do not. Three checks settle most cases. The serial number on the movement and the caseback must match the paperwork. The movement must run at 25,200 vibrations per hour. The price must sit near retail. A new steel Master Chronometer listed at $300 is counterfeit.

Know which watch you are checking

Omega uses the Seamaster 300 name on two lines. Specifications differ.

  • Seamaster 300 (heritage line): 41 mm case, no helium escape valve, 300 m water resistance, reference numbers in the 233 and 234 groups. Master Chronometer versions arrived in 2017.
  • Seamaster Diver 300M: 42 mm case, helium escape valve at 10 o'clock, ceramic dial with laser-cut waves, reference numbers in the 210 group. Master Chronometer versions arrived in 2018.

A listing that pairs a 42 mm case with a 234 reference number has the description wrong. Look up the reference number before anything else.

Dial and case checks

Print quality is the first visual test. Genuine dial text stays sharp under a loupe. Letters have clean edges. The date window is cut clean and the date disc lines up with it. Copies show thick paint, uneven letter spacing, and date fonts that differ from the reference.

Check bezel, crown, and caseback. The bezel turns with even clicks and no play. The crown screws down without grit. Caseback engraving on genuine watches is deep and consistent, and the sapphire back shows the movement.

Movement and beat rate

Master Chronometer calibers in these lines include the 8800 in the Diver 300M and the 8912 in the 2021 Seamaster 300. Both run at 25,200 vibrations per hour, which is 7 beats per second. Count beats against a stopwatch for 15 seconds. A movement at 8 beats per second runs at 28,800 and is not one of these calibers. Copy movements often use a Seagull ST21 or an ETA 2824 clone under decorative plates and engraved rotors.

METAS puts each watch through eight tests. The tests include exposure to a 15,000 gauss magnetic field and a daily rate window of 0 to +5 seconds. Omega publishes the same figures for the same watches.

Serial numbers and paperwork

Ask the seller for the reference number, the serial number, and the warranty card. Omega covers Master Chronometer models with a five-year warranty. Take the watch to an Omega service center or to a watchmaker who can open the case. Movement engraving, balance wheel rate, and rotor finish confirm the caliber. Photos of a dial do not.

Price and legal position

US retail for steel Seamaster 300 and Diver 300M Master Chronometer models runs from about $6,000 to $7,500. A new watch offered under $1,000 is a copy. Trafficking in counterfeit goods violates 18 U.S.C. § 2320 in the United States. CBP seizes counterfeit watches at the border, and the buyer loses the money and the watch.
