Short answer
A clone Lange is a replica built to the outside dimensions of a genuine A. Lange & Söhne. Case size, dial layout, lug width, and strap taper copy the original. The movement does not. Most clones run a Seagull ST17, a Miyota 9015, or a Chinese quartz caliber. Genuine Lange watches use in-house calibres with a hand-engraved balance cock, a Glashütte three-quarter plate, gold chatons, and blued screws. No clone maker sells that movement. When a listing says "1:1 clone," it means the case and dial. It does not mean the inside.
Models that get copied
- Lange 1. 38.5 mm case, off-center dial, outsize date at 1 o'clock. The most common Lange clone.
- Datograph. 41 mm case, two subdials, flyback chronograph. Chrono clones use a Seagull ST19 or a 7750 copy.
- Saxonia. Thin three-hand watch, 38.5 mm or 40 mm. The plain dial is easier to copy than a Lange 1.
- Zeitwerk. Jumping hour and minute numerals. No clone reproduces the jumping mechanism. Clones show a quartz module or fixed discs.
- Odysseus. Steel sports model, 40.5 mm case, date and day. Steel is cheaper to machine than gold.
Movements inside clones
Three movement types show up in Lange clones. The Seagull ST17 automatic runs at 21,600 vph with about 40 hours of reserve. The Miyota 9015 runs at 28,800 vph with about 42 hours. Quartz calibers turn up in low-cost Lange 1 copies, and the seconds hand jumps once per second.
Decorated clones add a fake three-quarter plate, fake gold chatons, and fake blued screws. Some use a stamped balance cock with a laser-cut engraving pattern. A genuine balance cock is cut by hand with a burin, so the cuts differ from watch to watch. Stamped engraving repeats the same lines on every unit.
Dial and case checks
- Outsize date. Genuine uses two separate discs in a patented mechanism. Clone date fonts are wider or the two digits sit at different heights.
- Hands. Genuine hands are blued steel or rhodium. Clone hands are painted or plated brass.
- Caseback engraving. Genuine lettering is cut deep. Clone lettering is shallow and slightly rounded at the edges.
- Crystal. Sapphire shows up on mid and high tier clones. Mineral glass shows up on the cheap ones.
Prices
Clone Lange watches sell for about $80 to $400. Gold-plated steel cases and quartz movements sit at the low end. Clones with a Miyota 9015 and a sapphire crystal sit at the high end. Genuine prices differ by three orders of magnitude. A used Lange 1 in gold trades near $30,000 to $45,000. A Datograph Up/Down trades above $80,000. Prices move with the market, so check current listings by reference number.

Legal status in the US
Counterfeit watches are illegal to import into the United States. 19 U.S.C. § 1526 lets U.S. Customs and Border Protection seize and destroy goods that carry a counterfeit mark. CBP publishes seizure totals each year and watches appear in those totals. A buyer who orders a clone can lose the watch and the payment. Sellers who ship into the US face the same risk.
