Short answer

A. Lange & Söhne has never made a watch called the Lange 2. The name does not appear in the Glashütte catalog, and reference 258.026 does not match any Lange model I could verify in public catalogs or auction records. Search results for "fake lange 2 258.026" lead to replica listings. The watch those listings copy is the Lange 1.

How Lange reference numbers work

Lange uses a three-digit block plus a three-digit suffix. The Lange 1 sits in the 101 block. The Grand Lange 1 sits in the 115 block. The Lange 1 Moonphase sits in the 109 block, the Lange 1 Time Zone in the 116 block, the Datograph in the 403 block, the Langematik in the 308 block. The 258 block is not attached to a Lange 1 variant in the sources I checked. A seller who calls 258.026 a factory number has not read the catalog.

Where the name Lange 2 comes from

Two explanations appear in listings. Some sellers shorten model names to avoid brand filters on marketplaces. Others use "Lange 2" as a loose label for the Grand Lange 1, which measures about 41 mm across, against 38.5 mm for the Lange 1. If a listing shows an off-center dial, an outsize date in the top right, and a power reserve arc, it copies the Lange 1 layout, not a second generation.

What the real Lange 1 is

  • Case: 38.5 mm across, 9.8 mm thick. Yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, or platinum.
  • Dial: main time dial off-center at 9 o'clock, outsize date at 1 o'clock, small seconds at 4 o'clock, power reserve indicator at 3 o'clock.
  • Movement: hand-wound caliber L901.0, 72-hour power reserve, three-quarter plate in untreated German silver, hand-engraved balance cock, screwed gold chatons.

Where copies fail

Three checks catch most fakes. First, the movement. The L901.0 is hand-wound with no rotor. A display back that shows a rotor means an automatic movement, so the watch is not a Lange 1. Second, the power reserve hand. On the genuine watch it tracks the mainspring. Reports on low-cost copies describe that hand as fixed. Third, case size. Copies often measure 40 mm to 42 mm because they house a stock automatic movement, and the added width changes the dial proportions.

Price

Genuine Lange 1 watches trade between about $25,000 and $40,000 on the secondary market, depending on metal, box, and papers. Replica listings under the 258.026 label ask $200 to $800. Lange does not service fakes, and no parts exist for them. Lange does not publish an online serial lookup. Verification goes through its service center, which checks a serial number against factory records.

Before you buy

  1. Ask for the reference stamped on the caseback. Compare it with the Lange catalog.
  2. Ask for photos of the movement through the display back.
  3. Ask for a caliper photo of the case diameter.
  4. Ask what movement is inside, by name and caliber number.
