Answer first
Fake Lange 1 Daymatic watches exist, but the supply is thin. The Lange 1 Daymatic sits outside the high volume replica pipeline that copies Rolex, Audemars Piguet, and Patek Philippe. Fewer workshops build it, and the gap between a replica and the real watch is wide. Two parts cause most of that gap: the outsize date and the retrograde weekday display. On most replicas both are printed and fixed, so they never change.
What the real watch does
A. Lange & Söhne introduced the Lange 1 Daymatic in 2010. It was the first Lange 1 with automatic winding. The name combines the words day and automatic. The power reserve indicator of the hand wound Lange 1 is gone, replaced by a retrograde day of week display. The outsize date stays, built from two discs, one for the tens and one for the units.
Reported case sizes run from 38.5 mm to 39.5 mm, in yellow gold, white gold, pink gold, and platinum. The calibre L021.1 beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour and holds about 50 hours of power reserve. Finishing includes a hand engraved balance cock, gold chatons, and Glashütte ribbing. List prices are in the tens of thousands of US dollars.
Where replicas fail
- Outsize date. A real outsize date uses two discs and jumps at midnight. Replicas use one disc with printed numbers, or a fixed date under a window. The font is wrong and the number spacing is wrong.
- Weekday display. The retrograde arc needs a spring loaded hand that snaps back after Sunday. Replicas print the days or leave the hand fixed.
- Movement. Most fakes run a Miyota 9015, a Seagull ST series, or a generic Chinese automatic. Decorative plates and printed engraving sit on top. The rotor carries a stamped Lange mark.
- Case. Fakes run 1 mm to 3 mm thicker than the real watch. Plating thickness is measured in microns and wears through at the crown and lugs.
- Dial hardware. Applied markers on a fake sit flat or sit crooked. Hands show stamped edges.
How to inspect a listing
- Ask for a photo of the date at 11:59 PM and again at 12:01 AM. A real outsize date shows two discs and a jump.
- Ask for the weekday hand after Sunday. A retrograde hand returns to Monday at once.
- Measure case thickness with calipers. Anything past 12 mm raises a flag.
- Check the balance cock engraving under a loupe. Hand engraving shows cuts of different depth.
- Check the caseback screws and the gold chatons. Chatons hold blued screws on real Lange movements.
Price range
Replica Lange 1 Daymatic listings run from about $150 to $600. A small number of builds sell for $800 or more. Sellers label these as Swiss made or 1:1. Neither label changes the movement inside. The real watch trades for tens of thousands of dollars on the secondary market, so a low price is a signal, not a discount.
Legal and practical risk
Counterfeit watches are illegal to import into the United States. U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize a shipment and destroy it. Selling goods that carry a trademark without the owner's consent violates the Lanham Act. Buyers get no warranty, no service from the manufacturer, and no parts. Resale value is close to zero. A watchmaker who works on Lange movements may refuse the job, since parts do not fit.
Bottom line
The Lange 1 Daymatic is a hard watch to copy. The outsize date and the retrograde weekday display are the two features that reveal a fake. If a seller cannot show a date jump and a weekday snap, treat the watch as a replica and nothing more.
