Short answer
A "fake Lange 1 191 platinum" is a counterfeit watch. A. Lange & Söhne builds the Lange 1 in Glashütte, Germany, and sells it through its own boutiques and authorized dealers. The company has no replica line and no licensed copy. Any platinum Lange 1 sold as a replica copies a trademarked design without permission.
What the genuine watch is
A. Lange & Söhne relaunched in 1994 with four models. The Lange 1 was one of them. The dial layout is asymmetric: an outsize date at the top right, the main time dial off center to the left, a small seconds subdial at the bottom right, and a power reserve indicator. The movement is hand wound. Later Lange 1 versions use reference numbers in the 191 range. Earlier versions use 101 numbers. A reference number by itself does not prove a watch is real.
What counterfeits get wrong
- Weight. Platinum has a density near 21 g/cm3. Stainless steel sits near 7.9. A platinum copy that feels light is not platinum.
- Hallmarks. Genuine platinum cases carry a PT950 stamp. Copies stamp nothing, or stamp a steel case under plating.
- Movement. The L901.0 and its successors use screwed gold chatons, blued screws, and a hand-engraved balance cock. Copies use generic base movements with machine-cut decoration.
- Outsize date. Lange holds a patent on the jumping outsize date with two discs. Copies show one disc behind a mask, or discs that do not snap at midnight.
- Case size and lugs. Copies vary from the published dimensions by a millimeter or more.
Law and resale
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime in the United States under 18 U.S.C. 2320. Civil claims fall under the Lanham Act. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit watches at import. A counterfeit gets no manufacturer service, no parts supply, and no resale value at the price paid.
How to check one
- Ask for the original invoice, warranty booklet, and box.
- Compare the caseback number with the paperwork.
- Send the watch to a Lange boutique or an authorized service partner. The service center confirms or rejects the serial.
- Weigh and measure the case. Published dimensions and platinum density give a quick screen.
Two points I cannot verify here: production totals for any single 191 reference, and current secondary market prices. Ask the manufacturer or an auction house archive for those numbers.
