Short answer
A fake IW3237 is a counterfeit of the IWC Ingenieur Automatic. The genuine watch runs an in-house IWC automatic movement inside a steel case with magnetic shielding, and it carries a numbered caseback. Replicas use third-party movements, printed dials, and cases that miss the original dimensions by small amounts. Price is the fastest test. Genuine examples sell in the thousands of dollars. Replicas sell in the hundreds.
What reference IW3237 covers
IW3237 sits in the Ingenieur family. The line started in 1976 with a Gérald Genta design, reference 1832, built around an integrated bracelet and a bezel with five recessed slots. IWC has used the IW3237 prefix across several sub-references that differ in dial color, case metal, and bracelet finish. The full code, the prefix plus two digits, names the exact variant. Ask for that code first. Without it, no comparison is possible. IWC publishes case diameter, height, movement, and water resistance for each sub-reference. Use those numbers as the baseline.
Where replicas differ
Movement
Replica Ingenieurs ship with an ETA 2892 clone or a Miyota 9015. Both are 28,800 vph automatics. Neither is an IWC caliber. The genuine watch in this generation uses IWC Pellaton winding, a pawl system, and a rotor with specific engraving. Look through the display back and read the rotor text. Replica bridges show coarse machining marks and no finishing on surfaces that are hard to see.
Case and bracelet
- Measure the case with calipers. Replica cases run off by 0.3 mm to 1 mm in diameter and sit thicker than the original.
- Check the crown. Genuine crowns sit flush, carry the IWC logo in relief, and turn with clean detents.
- Inspect the bracelet fasteners. Genuine links use screws or pins per the sub-reference. A mismatch in fastener type is a fail.
- Check play at the end links. The genuine bracelet fits tight and does not rattle.
Dial and hands
Compare the IWC and Schaffhausen text under magnification. Genuine pad printing has crisp edges. Replica print shows ink spread and uneven stroke width. Applied markers on the genuine dial are beveled and polished on the sides. Check the date wheel font and the cut of the date window. On black dials, confirm that the dial black and the date wheel black match.
Caseback
Look at engraving depth, the reference format, and the serial number. Genuine engraving is cut into the metal. Laser etching sits on the surface and looks shallow. A serial number that shows up on a second watch from the same seller is a red flag.
Price bands
Genuine IW3237 examples on the secondary market sit in a wide band, from about $3,000 to $6,500 depending on sub-reference, metal, condition, and papers. Replica sellers ask $250 to $700. A genuine offer below $1,500 with box and papers is a counterfeit or a watch built from mixed parts.
Legal and service notes
Counterfeit sales violate US trademark law, and Customs can seize shipments. IWC does not service counterfeits. Repair on a replica depends on a local watchmaker and parts supply. Resale value on a replica is close to zero.
