Short answer
A fake IW329114 is a counterfeit of an IWC Pilot's Watch Mark XVIII. The real watch has a 40 mm stainless steel case, 11 mm thickness, 20 mm lug width, sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, and caliber 35111: 25 jewels, 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), about 42 hours of power reserve. Check those numbers first. Then check the date font, the caseback engraving, and the movement under the caseback.
IWC builds the Mark XVIII in several dial and case versions under the IW3291 reference block. Confirm the exact variant on the caseback and against IWC's own product listing before you judge a specific watch. IWC does not publish one page per reference number for every edition, so the caseback and the paperwork carry the weight.
1. Case and dimensions
Measure the case with a caliper. 40.0 mm across the bezel, 11 mm thick, 20 mm between the lugs. A fake runs 41 to 42 mm or sits 12 mm thick because the case is milled from a generic blank.
Finish: brushed top surfaces, polished flanks, sharp edges. Look at the lug edges under a lamp. Rounded lug edges and soft transitions point to a cheap case.
2. Dial, hands, and crystal
- Printed numerals and indices sit level with even spacing. The 12 o'clock triangle points at the center of the dial.
- Lume fills the printed markers to the same depth. Overflow and gaps show up in a photo at 2x zoom.
- Hands sit level and the second hand reaches the minute track. A short second hand is a common fault.
- Crystal: sapphire with a faint blue or purple reflection from the anti-reflective coating. Mineral glass scratches and shows no such tint.
3. Date window and calendar
The date sits at 3 o'clock. The date wheel font is thin and matches the dial print. Watch the date at 23:50 and 00:10. A genuine caliber 35111 flips once and settles within a few minutes. A fake with a low-grade movement flips late or sits off-center in the window.
4. Crown
The crown carries the IWC mark. Threads engage in two or three turns and the stem has no wobble. Water resistance on the Mark XVIII is 6 bar on the spec sheet, and a counterfeit case with a pressed caseback has no gasket quality behind that claim.
5. Caseback, serials, and movement
Look at the engraving depth. Laser engraving on a fake is shallow and gray. Real engraving cuts into the metal with sharp walls.
- Reference number on the caseback matches the dial version.
- Serial number is unique and matches the warranty card and the movement.
- Rotor engraving and movement finish: Geneva stripes, perlage, blued screws. Fakes leave the movement raw or print a finish.
A watchmaker with a timegrapher can open the back and read the calibre under the balance. Caliber 35111 is based on the Sellita SW300-1. A counterfeit movement from Asia shows a different bridge layout and a different jewel count.
6. Strap and buckle
Santoni leather on some editions, a signed pin buckle or folding clasp on others. Check stitch density, the leather backing, and the stamp on the buckle.
7. Provenance and price
Ask for the box, papers, and warranty card with a matching serial. A price far below the market for a used Mark XVIII is the strongest signal. Compare against completed sales, not asking prices.
A service invoice from IWC or an authorized watchmaker carries the reference and the serial. That document is hard to fake.
Checks that prove nothing
- Weight in the hand.
- The words "Swiss made" on the dial.
- A smooth sweeping second hand. Both the real caliber and many counterfeit movements run at 28,800 vph.
- The seller's story.
Verification steps
- Photograph the dial straight on, no angle, in daylight.
- Compare the date font and the numeral spacing against a photo from IWC.
- Measure the case with a caliper: diameter, thickness, lug width.
- Time the watch over 24 hours against a reference clock.
- Have a watchmaker open the caseback and identify the calibre.
- Ask IWC or an authorized service partner to confirm the serial.
If one step fails, stop. One failed check is enough.
