On almost every listing, 42mm is the pendant's diameter, not a chain length. Chains are sold in inches. A 42mm pendant measures about 1.65 inches across, which is a statement piece, not a subtle one. If the title also says Drive, it is borrowing a name from the Cartier Drive de Cartier watch line, a watch collection with no necklace counterpart. That is why these pieces are sold as replicas, and why the size number ends up being the most useful spec in the whole listing.
Why 42mm changes everything

The honest take: a 42mm gold necklace can look great, and the size is the reason. Just buy it knowing whether the gold is a thin layer or the whole metal, because that one fact decides whether you get two years or twenty.
