Short answer
A fake Cartier Santos rose gold is a copy of the Santos de Cartier, the square-case watch Cartier built for aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont in 1904. Genuine rose gold versions use 18k gold and the in-house calibre 1847 MC. Retail prices sit between about $25,000 and $45,000 USD. Replicas use steel with gold plating and quartz or Chinese automatic movements. They sell for $60 to $800.
What the genuine watch is
The modern Santos de Cartier launched in 2018. Large model case specs: 39.8 mm wide, 47.5 mm lug to lug, 9.38 mm thick. The medium model measures 35.1 mm by 41.9 mm by 8.83 mm. Both hold 100 m of water resistance and carry a crown set with a blue synthetic spinel.
The Santos-Dumont is a separate line. The large size measures 46.6 mm by 33.9 mm by 7.5 mm, runs a hand-wound calibre 430 MC, and holds 30 m of water resistance.
Gold versus plating
Cartier marks 18k cases with 750 and a Swiss assay stamp. 18k rose gold is 75% gold, with copper for the pink tone and a small amount of palladium or silver. Density sits near 15.2 g/cm3. Type 316L steel sits near 8.0 g/cm3. A gold case weighs close to double a steel case of the same volume.
Replicas use PVD or electroplated gold over 316L steel. Plating depth runs 3 to 5 microns on better pieces and under 1 micron on cheap ones. Wear shows first at the crown, the clasp edges, and the caseback rim. Base metal appears as a grey or yellow-grey patch.
Movement and parts
The genuine automatic Santos de Cartier uses calibre 1847 MC: 28,800 vibrations per hour, 23 jewels, 42 hours of power reserve. That is 8 beats per second. Replica tiers differ:
- Under $150: quartz, Miyota or Seiko units. Dial printing shows soft edges.
- $150 to $350: Chinese automatic, Seagull ST-series or Hangzhou. Plating near 3 microns. Sapphire crystal on some units.
- $400 to $800: decorated clone of the 1847 MC, 5 micron plating, tighter bezel screw spacing.
Solid 18k gold does not appear in this price range. Cartier will not service a counterfeit, and many independent watchmakers decline because internal parts do not match the original.
How to check a piece
- Weigh it. A large Santos in 18k gold on a full bracelet comes in far heavier than a plated steel copy.
- Look for the 750 stamp, the Swiss assay mark, and the Cartier engraving on the caseback.
- Inspect the crown, clasp, and caseback edge for plating wear.
- Check bracelet links. The SmartLink system releases links with a latch and no tool. Most replicas need a pin press.
- Watch the seconds hand. The 1847 MC sweeps at 8 beats per second. Quartz jumps once per second.
Legal status in the US
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison. Repeat offenses reach 20 years.
