Short answer
A fake Cartier Santos in gold is one of two things. It is a counterfeit watch sold as real Cartier, or it is a copy with a gold-plated case and bracelet. Solid 18k gold Santos models carry a fineness stamp, a maker's mark, and an official hallmark. They also weigh about twice as much as a steel or plated copy of the same size. Density of 18k yellow gold is about 15.5 g/cm3. Density of stainless steel is about 7.9 g/cm3.
What the gold versions are
Cartier lists Santos de Cartier references in 18k yellow gold, 18k rose gold, and 18k white gold, with and without diamonds. The line also includes steel models and two-tone steel and gold models. Full gold pieces use solid gold for the case, bezel, and bracelet. Copies use brass, steel, or zinc alloy with a plating layer over the top.
Weight and feel
Mass is the fastest field check. A full gold Santos on a gold bracelet has a heft that a plated copy does not match. Plating is thin on most copies and rubs through at contact points: clasp, crown, bracelet edges, and caseback. Under the plating the base metal shows a different color. Scratches on a plated copy show gray or yellow-white metal. Scratches on solid gold stay gold.
Stamps and hallmarks
- Fineness stamp: 750 for 18k gold. Older pieces can read 18k or .750.
- Maker's mark: a registered mark in a lozenge shape, struck next to the fineness stamp.
- Official hallmark: Swiss gold parts carry an official hallmark in addition to the fineness stamp.
- Caseback engraving: reference number and case number, unique to each watch.
Replica stamps are shallow, off-center, or use a font that does not match Cartier engraving. Inspect them with a 10x loupe.
Movement and case details
Modern Santos de Cartier watches use the in-house calibre 1847 MC, an automatic movement. Earlier Santos models used ETA-based calibres. A gold case is not proof of a genuine watch. Counterfeiters fit replica movements into solid gold cases. Case shape, screw heads, dial printing, and crystal material need separate checks. Sapphire resists a steel point. Mineral glass and acrylic do not.
Price signals
Solid gold Santos watches sell in the tens of thousands of US dollars at retail. Cartier publishes current prices and they change. A gold Santos offered below the scrap value of its gold content is a warning sign. Scrap value depends on weight and the daily gold price. Weigh the watch and check the spot price of gold before you decide.
Testing steps
- Weigh the watch. Compare the result to the published weight range for the same reference in gold.
- Inspect the stamps with a 10x loupe. Check placement, depth, and font.
- Look at wear points. Plating shows a different color under the surface layer.
- Ask a jeweler for an X-ray fluorescence test. XRF reads alloy composition and causes no damage.
- Ask for the original invoice and service paperwork.
Skip the magnet test. Gold and stainless steel are both non-magnetic, so the test separates nothing.
Limits
No single check is conclusive. XRF and density tests measure metal. They do not confirm that Cartier made the watch. A counterfeit movement in a real gold case passes a metal test. Dial, hands, crystal, and movement each need their own check. If you cannot verify a piece, say so and walk away.
