Short answer
A "fake Cartier pre-owned" is a counterfeit watch offered as a used genuine Cartier. The watch is not a Cartier product. Cartier did not make it, does not service it, and does not recognize it. In the US, selling one is trafficking in counterfeit goods. Importing one is a customs violation.
Pre-owned listings for Cartier watches mix genuine pieces, rebuilt pieces, and counterfeits. The Tank, Santos, Ballon Bleu, and Panthere lines are the most copied. A steel Tank or Santos listed far under market is the most common trap.
Why counterfeits reach the pre-owned market
- Cartier makes large volumes of steel models. A counterfeit case can carry a reference number that exists.
- Boxes, booklets, and warranty cards are easy to copy and are sold on their own.
- Marketplaces depend on seller photos. Condition reports are often the seller's own words.
Checks that work
Caseback and serial
Genuine Cartier watches carry a serial number engraved on the caseback, plus a model or reference number. The engraving is cut into the metal. It is not printed, surface-etched, or applied as a sticker. Compare the reference number against the model it claims to be. A Tank Must caseback should not show a Santos reference.
Dial
Cartier prints a hidden "CARTIER" inside a Roman numeral on many models, most often the VII. On genuine dials the letters sit inside the numeral strokes and stay legible under magnification. Copies often omit the mark or fill it with a solid blob. Check the "Swiss Made" line at 6 o'clock. The letters are crisp and the spacing is even.
Case and bracelet
Look at the lug fit, the crown cabochon, and the bracelet screws. Genuine Cartier finishing is uniform across the case. Counterfeit cases show rounded edges, uneven brushing, and gaps at the lugs. A synthetic blue spinel cabochon on the crown is common on copies. Genuine crown stones sit flush with the metal.
Papers and service records
A Cartier service invoice with a case number is the strongest document. A warranty card alone proves little, because cards are printed in bulk. Ask for the original purchase receipt with a dealer name and a date.
What Cartier will do
Cartier boutiques and authorized service centers can inspect a watch and state whether it is genuine. Cartier does not publish a public serial number database. Any site that claims to verify a Cartier serial in seconds is not an official source. Cartier declines service on counterfeit watches and does not return replaced parts.
Red flags
- Price far below the going rate for that reference.
- Seller will not send a photo of the caseback engraving.
- Listing uses stock photos instead of the actual watch.
- No service history on a watch over 10 years old.
- Pressure to pay outside the platform's buyer protection.
Legal position in the US
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320. Penalties reach 10 years in prison for a first offense and fines up to $2 million for an individual. US Customs and Border Protection can seize counterfeit watches at import. The personal-use exemption that covers some goods does not cover counterfeit trademarked items.
If you already bought one
Stop the payment if you can. File a dispute with the platform. Report the listing. Keep the messages and photos. A chargeback claim built on "counterfeit" needs the seller's description and the item's actual condition. If the seller shipped from abroad, report the shipment to CBP.
