A fake Cartier Astrotourbillon is a copy of a watch Cartier showed in 2010. The real watch puts the tourbillon carriage at the center of the dial. The carriage turns one full circle per minute and carries the balance wheel on a rotating arm. Most replicas do not do this. Replica prices run $250 to $1,500. Genuine Astrotourbillon watches sell for six figures.

What the genuine watch does

Cartier presented the Calibre de Cartier Astrotourbillon at SIHH in 2010. Caliber 9451 MC. Case diameter 47 mm. The escapement and balance sit on an arm that sweeps around the dial, so the tourbillon also serves as the seconds display.

Later versions include the Rotonde de Cartier Astrotourbillon Skeleton from 2014 with caliber 9461 MC, and a 2012 Carbon Crystal model. Cartier builds these movements in Switzerland. Retail prices sit above $100,000. Resale prices track condition, box, and papers.

Three grades of replica

  1. Decorative arm. A plate with a printed arm sits over a standard automatic or quartz movement. The arm does not turn, or turns with the hour hand. $40 to $150. Sold as "Astrotourbillon style".
  2. Fake rotating arm. A motor or a gear train off the center wheel spins a bar. The rotation period is wrong, 12 hours or 60 seconds, with no balance wheel on the arm. $200 to $600.
  3. Real tourbillon. A Chinese tourbillon movement from Seagull or Hangzhou with a modified bridge that copies the Cartier layout. The cage holds a real balance and escapement. $700 to $1,500. Case sizes land at 42 mm to 44 mm because donor movements do not fit a 47 mm case.

Checks that separate a replica from the real one

  • Rotation speed. Film the dial for 60 seconds. The genuine arm makes one full turn. One turn per hour, or per 12 hours, means the part is decoration.
  • Balance on the arm. On the real watch the balance wheel rides at the end of the arm. On fakes the balance stays in the movement and the arm is a separate part.
  • Case size. Genuine 47 mm. Most replicas 42 mm to 44 mm.
  • Case back. Genuine engraving reads 9451 MC or 9461 MC, plus a serial number and a reference number. Sapphire case back.
  • Weight. A gold Astrotourbillon weighs more than 100 g. Steel replicas land between 80 g and 120 g.
  • Crown. Cartier fits a sapphire or spinel cabochon. Replicas use glass or dyed plastic.

Price and legal points

Genuine Astrotourbillon watches trade above $100,000. Replica prices cluster between $250 and $1,500, and the movement drives the number. A real tourbillon cage costs more to build, so a listing under $300 with a working center carriage is not what it claims.

In the United States, trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320. Penalties reach 10 years for a first offense in some cases. CBP seizes counterfeit watches at ports. Selling a replica as a genuine watch is fraud in every US state.

If you own one or plan to buy

Take the watch to a watchmaker and open the case back. Compare the caliber number with Cartier records. Ask for a 60 second video of the dial before payment. No video, no sale. Cartier service centers do not service replicas, and parts for caliber 9451 MC and 9461 MC come from Cartier.
