Fake Breguet Type XX: the short answer
A fake Breguet Type XX fails on four checks: case engraving, dial printing, movement type, and paperwork. Genuine Type XX chronographs run on Breguet calibres developed from Lemania chronograph ébauches. Most copies run a stock Valjoux 7750 or a Seagull ST19. Those movements do not match the case thickness, the pusher feel, or the subdial layout of a real Breguet.
Why the Type XX gets copied
Breguet built the Type XX as a tool watch for the French military in the 1950s. The dial is plain next to the Classique line, so there is no hand-guilloché pattern to reproduce. Steel cases cost less to machine than gold. Auction prices for military Type 20 chronographs reached five figures, which pulls copies into the secondhand market.
Check the reference and serial numbers
- Type XX ref. 3800: relaunched 1995, 39 mm steel case, automatic calibre, display back.
- Type XXI ref. 3810: early 2000s, 42 mm case, central chronograph minutes hand, 24-hour indicator.
- Type XX ref. 2057: 2023, 42 mm steel case, calibre 7281, flyback chronograph, 60-hour power reserve.
- Serial number on the caseback, plus a matching number on the certificate.
- Breguet B hallmark on the crown and the caseback.
Engraving is a fast tell. Genuine Breguet engraving has cut edges and consistent depth. Copies show shallow laser etching, uneven spacing, and a serial font that changes between batches.
Dial and hands
Look at the subdials first. The ref. 3800 has a 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock and running seconds at 9 o'clock. A 7750-based copy cannot place its counters on that axis without a module, and the module adds depth the case was not cut for. Check the Breguet signature: letters are sharp, the baseline is level, and "Swiss Made" sits at 6 o'clock with even spacing. Lume plots on genuine 1990s and early 2000s models have aged to a cream color. Fresh white or bright green plots point to a modern copy.
Movement
The ref. 3800 has a display back, so the movement is visible. Genuine watches show a signed rotor, Côtes de Genève stripes on the bridges, and heat-blued screws. A Seagull ST19 is hand-wound. If the chronograph needs winding each day and there is no rotor, it is not a 3800. The 2023 ref. 2057 uses calibre 7281. Test the flyback function: one push resets and restarts the chronograph.
Pushers, crown, and case
Genuine chronograph pushers start, stop, and reset with light pressure and no rattle. A 7750 copy feels soft and the reset is heavy. The crown on a genuine Type XX has a crisp B hallmark and threads that engage in one turn.
Papers, box, and price
A genuine set carries a certificate with a serial and reference that match the case, a Breguet box, and a warranty card. Price is a filter. A steel ref. 3800 sells in the high four figures to low five figures in US dollars on the secondary market. The 2023 ref. 2057 lists above $15,000. An offer far below those numbers is a warning, not a deal.
How to verify before you buy
A Breguet service center checks a serial against factory records. Auction catalogs list case and reference numbers for the lots they sell, which gives a comparison point. Ask for a photo of the caseback serial and the certificate. If the seller will not send one, stop.
