The short answer

A "fake Breguet 5405" is a counterfeit: a watch built to look like a Breguet reference with no connection to the manufacture in the Vallée de Joux. Nobody outside Breguet makes a Breguet. Whatever the listing calls it, super clone, 1:1, Swiss made, the object is an unauthorised copy of a trademarked design, and that fact shapes everything about it, from the movement inside to whether any watchmaker will ever touch it.

If you are trying to work out whether a watch in front of you is genuine, the checks below are the ones that decide it. If someone is offering you a "5405" at a price that seems impossible, they tell you what to verify before any money moves.

Start with the reference number

Breguet publishes its references in its own catalogues, and authorised dealers can confirm what a given number corresponds to. Match the number engraved on the caseback to the model in Breguet's own documentation before you look at anything else. Photos in counterfeit listings are routinely taken from genuine listings, so the number on the watch itself is worth more than any image the seller sends you.

The dial

Breguet dials are engine-turned on a rose engine, cut into the metal or silvered surface rather than printed on it. Under a loupe, real guilloché has crisp, deep grooves with clean edges and even spacing. Stamped or pad-printed imitations look shallow and slightly soft, and the pattern often drifts or breaks where it meets the chapter ring.

Most Breguet dials also carry a secret signature, historically hand-signed in an inconspicuous spot, applied by laser on modern pieces. It should be visible when you tilt the watch, not painted over the finish.

Hands

Breguet's pomme creuse hands are blued steel with a hollowed apple tip and a polished bevel. The blue comes from heat treatment, so it shifts tone as you rotate the watch under light. Painted blue looks flat, and often slightly purple.

Case, hallmarks, paperwork

  • Gold cases carry assay hallmarks and purity stamps such as 750 or Au750. Plated brass and steel copies either lack them or show them stamped in rather than struck.
  • Engraving on the caseback should be sharp, consistent, and match the certificate. Counterfeit engraving is frequently shallow or set in the wrong font.
  • Breguet issues a certificate with each watch, and the archives can confirm older pieces. For anything vintage, ask for an Extract from the Archives.
  • Weight tells you a lot. Solid gold has a density that a plated case does not reproduce.

The movement

This is where copies stop being convincing in person. Breguet movements are finished by hand: bridges with Geneva stripes or engine-turned surfaces, blued screws, anglaged edges, engraving that matches the reference. Counterfeit watches run on generic ébauches or cloned movements with the wrong finishing, the wrong jewel count, or an engraving that does not exist anywhere in Breguet's range. A watchmaker can tell in minutes, and no Breguet service centre will work on a copy.

Price is the loudest tell

If a watch that trades in the five figures on the secondary market is offered for a few hundred dollars, it is a copy. That is not a bargain. It is a counterfeit, and the seller knows exactly what they are selling.

The legal side in the US

Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320, and CBP seizes counterfeit watches at the border and can destroy them. Selling a copy as genuine adds fraud on top of that. Even a personal purchase is not clean: the goods can be seized in transit, you have no recourse if the watch arrives broken, and reselling it later brings you inside the same trafficking statute.

If you are offered one

Ask for the reference number and the certificate, then verify both against Breguet's own materials. Have a watchmaker open the case. If the seller refuses either step, you already have your answer.
