Short answer
Breguet does not make a 5395 replica. Reference 5395 is the Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Squelette, a platinum watch with a hand-wound skeleton tourbillon caliber. Counterfeits copy the outline of the case and the openworked look. They do not use the Breguet movement, the Breguet finishing or a Breguet serial number that the brand can confirm. In the United States, importing or selling one is illegal.
What the reference 5395 is
Montres Breguet, part of the Swatch Group, builds the 5395 in the Classique line. The caliber 581SQ is 3 mm thick, hand-wound, and carries a tourbillon with a power reserve of about 80 hours. Breguet lists silicon parts in the escapement. The case is platinum with sapphire on both faces. Retail sits in the six figures in US dollars, so a listing at four or five figures is a counterfeit or a mislabeled watch.
Points where copies fail
- Movement: The 581SQ is 3 mm thick, and the case that holds it is thin for a watch this size. Counterfeit cases run several millimeters taller because the base movement is thicker. Measure the case height and compare it with the manufacturer figure.
- Tourbillon cage: A real cage turns once a minute and carries the balance inside it. Some counterfeit 5395s use a real Chinese tourbillon, so a rotating cage proves nothing by itself. Watch for 60 seconds and confirm the balance rides inside the cage.
- Finishing: Breguet bevels bridges by hand. The bevels are wide, flat, and mirror bright along the flank. Screw slots are polished. Counterfeit bridges show laser-cut edges, a matte gray cut face, and bevels that catch light in patches.
- Engraving and serial: The caseback carries the Breguet name, the reference, and a serial number. Fake engraving is shallow and often laser burned. Search the serial. If the same number turns up in two listings, both watches are counterfeits.
- Weight: Platinum has a density near 21.4 g/cm3, steel near 7.9, and 18k gold near 15.5. A platinum 5395 feels heavy for its size. Gold-plated brass and steel copies feel light.
- Crystal: Genuine sapphire has anti-reflective coating on two faces. Many counterfeits coat one face, which shows a colored glare from an angle.
- Papers and service: A genuine watch can be identified from its serial by Montres Breguet or a Swatch Group service center. No such check exists for a counterfeit.
Steps to check a watch
- Ask for the serial number and the reference stamped on the caseback.
- Ask for macro photos of the movement, the bevels, and the caseback engraving.
- Measure the case thickness and compare it with the manufacturer figure.
- Weigh the watch. Platinum examples are heavy for the size.
- Have a watchmaker open the case. Look for a stock blank movement, added plates, and decorative screws that hold nothing.
- Send the serial to Montres Breguet or a Swatch Group service center.
- Get a written report from an auction house or an independent appraiser before money moves.
Legal note
Counterfeit watches infringe the Breguet trademark. US Customs and Border Protection can seize and destroy them at import. Selling counterfeits exposes a seller to civil claims and, in some cases, criminal charges. A counterfeit carries no warranty and no parts support from the brand.
What is not public
Breguet does not publish a public serial number database. Production totals for the 5395 are not published. Authentication rests on the brand, a service center, or a trained watchmaker, not on a web page.
