The short answer
A fake Breguet 5287 is a counterfeit version of the Breguet Classique Chronograph, reference 5287, a hand-wound gold dress chronograph that Breguet has sold in rose, yellow, and white gold. Genuine examples trade in the five figures on the secondary market. Counterfeits sell from about $150 up to $800, and a few sellers push "super clone" versions past that. The price gap is not only branding. It shows in the movement architecture, the case metal, and the hand finishing, and you can inspect all three in about two minutes with a loupe or a phone camera.
What the genuine 5287 is
The 5287 sits in Breguet's Classique line: round case, fluted caseband, welded lugs, and a dial built around guilloché patterns and Breguet hands. The reference is roughly 42.5 mm across, which is large for a dress chronograph, and it wears that way.
- Calibre 533.2, hand-wound, column wheel, horizontal clutch, built on the Lemania chronograph architecture Breguet inherited when it bought Nouvelle Lemania.
- Twin subdials, a 30 minute counter and running seconds, in a bicompax layout.
- Silvered gold dial with engine turned guilloché, Breguet numerals, and blued steel hands.
- Solid gold case, sapphire front and back, alligator strap with a gold buckle.
None of that is exotic for a high-end chronograph. All of it is expensive to fake well.
Fake Breguet 5287 Luxury Watch: A Buyer's Reality Check
Where replicas fall apart
The movement
This is the giveaway. Turn the watch over. A real 5287 has a hand-wound movement with a visible column wheel, a horizontal clutch, and Geneva stripes over polished steel parts. Most replicas run a Chinese Seagull ST19 chronograph, a modular add-on stacked on a basic automatic, or quartz. A quartz 5287 is not subtle: the chronograph seconds hand ticks once per second instead of sweeping. On ST19 fakes the decoration is plating and laser etching that looks flat the moment you magnify it.
Case, dial, and hands
Replica cases are usually gold plated brass or plain steel. A solid gold 5287 has real mass in the hand, and plating wears through at the lugs within months of daily wear. The guilloché on replica dials is stamped or printed, so the pattern looks shallow and the lines catch light evenly instead of shifting as you tilt the watch. Blued steel hands hold a deep color with slight variation along the length; painted blue hands look flat and go purple under some light.
Numbers and paperwork
Genuine Breguet watches carry a serial on the caseback and a matching number on the movement, plus a certificate. Fakes often reuse one serial across a whole batch, and the caseback engraving is shallow or set in the wrong font. If the number on the watch does not match the number on the papers, that answers the question.
Proportions
Many replica chronographs run 1 to 2 mm thicker than the real thing, because the base movement is thicker and the case has to swallow it. On the wrist that reads as a bulky side profile and lugs that sit too far off the skin.
How I check one in hand
- Flip it over and study the movement: hand-wound, column wheel, clean stripes.
- Weigh it. Solid gold has heft.
- Run the chronograph and watch the seconds hand sweep rather than tick.
- Tilt the dial under a lamp and watch the guilloché shift.
- Match serials on the case, the movement, and the certificate.
- Press the pushers. A real column wheel chronograph has a light, crisp action.
One failure is enough to walk away. Two or more and you are holding a counterfeit.
Risks that photos never show
Trafficking in counterfeit watches is a federal crime in the United States, and Customs seizes shipments of them on a routine basis. Buying one for yourself is a smaller personal risk, but the watch arrives with no warranty, no serviceable movement, and no parts channel from Breguet. Independent watchmakers often decline counterfeits because replacement parts do not exist and case metal is not worth the bench time. Water resistance ratings on replicas are guesswork.
Quick answers
Is a "super clone" 5287 close to the real one?
No. It can pass in a photo at arm's length. It does not fool anyone who opens the caseback or handles gold every day.
Can a replica be serviced?
Sometimes, by a watchmaker willing to work on clone movements. It will never accept genuine Breguet parts, so it stays a replica.
Does the genuine 5287 hold value?
Breguet chronographs generally trade below retail on the secondary market, so treat one as a watch to wear rather than an investment. Counterfeits have no resale value at all.
