A fake Breguet 3358 Tourbillon is a copy of the Breguet Classique Tourbillon Messidor, reference 3358, a skeletonized hand-wound tourbillon in an 18k gold case. Replicas run from about $150 for quartz or open-heart versions up to $1,500 or more for copies built around a real Chinese tourbillon movement. None of them use Breguet's caliber, Breguet's gold, or anything Breguet will touch. What the original 3358 actually is
Breguet built the Tourbillon Messidor inside its Classique line. The dial is skeletonized, the tourbillon carriage sits at 6 o'clock, and the movement is visible from the front and the back. Cases are 18k rose or yellow gold, roughly 35 to 36 mm across, and production numbers stayed low. Auction houses regularly list examples in the tens of thousands of dollars, which tells you the reference was never a mass-market watch.
What replica versions get right and wrong
Replica makers nail the silhouette first. The case shape, the lugs, and the big visible tourbillon opening read correctly from two feet away. Then the details fall apart:
- Case metal. Gold plating or PVD, not solid gold. A real gold case carries weight you notice the second you pick it up.
- The tourbillon itself. Many sub-$300 copies use an open-heart cutout that never rotates. Mid and upper tiers do use real Chinese tourbillon movements from makers like Sea-Gull, Hangzhou, and Liaoning.
- Finishing. Engraving is shallow and stamped-looking. Screws are painted blue instead of heat-blued, so the color is flat and even rather than shifting in the light.
- Dial work. Skeletonizing on a genuine 3358 is hand-finished metal and sapphire. Copies print the pattern or cut it with visible tool marks.
- Markings. Swiss gold hallmarks and matching case numbers are usually missing or wrong.
How to spot a fake 3358 in a minute
Watch the cage for a full 60 seconds. A true tourbillon completes one rotation per minute; a decorative cutout just sits there. Next, check the weight and the screw slot colors. Then flip the watch and look for gold hallmarks and a case number that matches the paperwork. Finally, use a loupe on the engraving. Hand engraving has depth variation; laser work looks uniform.
Price tiers and what they deliver
- $100 to $250: quartz or open-heart, plated case, no real tourbillon.
- $400 to $800: working tourbillon movement, basic decoration, plated case.
- $1,000 to $2,000: nicer movement finishing, sapphire parts, sometimes a gold cap on the case.
Nothing in any tier matches a hand-finished Breguet, and none of it holds value.
Practical realities before you buy
Breguet will not service or authenticate a counterfeit, and many independent watchmakers will refuse the work. Water resistance claims on replicas are marketing copy, not tested specs. Resale is a small fraction of what you paid. In the United States, counterfeit goods are prohibited imports and can be seized by Customs. If the goal is simply a skeleton tourbillon on your wrist, Sea-Gull and other Chinese brands sell their own tourbillons under their own names for a few hundred dollars, and that route comes with a warranty and no legal risk.
