A fake Blancpain Air Command usually exposes itself in three places: the chronograph beat rate, whether it can truly fly back, and the case finishing. The genuine reissue runs the F388B, a high-beat flyback caliber at 5 Hz, or 36,000 vibrations per hour. Film the chrono hand in slow motion and count the ticks. Ten per second means high beat. Eight per second means an ordinary 4 Hz movement, which is what most copies use. Then run the flyback test. Press the lower pusher while the chrono is running. A real Air Command snaps to zero and keeps running. A fake stops, resets, and waits for you to press start again.

Know the watch you are comparing against

Blancpain built the original Air Command in the late 1950s, and only about a dozen examples are known today. The 2019 reissue brought it back as a 42.3 mm steel chronograph in a run of 500 pieces, followed by titanium versions with different dial colors. It is a two-register chronograph with a countdown bezel, and the movement is the entire point of the watch. Because the reissue is limited and the original is close to unobtainable, fakes show up often in the used market, particularly on auction sites and social media classifieds.

The checks that matter most

1. Beat rate and flyback

This is the test almost no copy passes. A true flyback lets you reset and restart the chronograph with a single pusher press while it runs. Most fakes use an Asian 7750 at 4 Hz or a hand-wound 3 Hz movement, and neither has a working flyback. The pusher feel gives it away too. On the real watch the reset has a short, clean snap. On copies it feels mushy or it grinds through two distinct stages.

2. Case and lug finishing

Look at where brushed surfaces meet polished ones. A genuine case has sharp, straight transitions and lugs with defined facets. Copies show rounded edges, soft lug tips, and brushing that looks sanded rather than grained. Run a fingernail along the lug bevel. If it slides instead of catching, the case was not finished to Blancpain standards.

3. Dial printing and hands

Text on a real dial is crisp, with even spacing and correct stroke weight. Fakes show muddy lettering, uneven gaps, and hands that are slightly too thick or have poorly polished bevels. Check the lume under a UV light. It should be even and consistent across the dial and hands, not blotchy or off in color from one marker to the next.

4. Bezel action

The bezel should turn with firm, consistent resistance and no vertical play. Numerals should be crisp and evenly filled, and the marker at 12 should line up dead center with the dial. A wobbly bezel or printing that sits outside the engraving is a strong warning sign.

5. Caseback and edition numbers

Engraving depth and font matter. On the 500-piece run, the edition number should be present and should match the certificate. Fakes often carry generic engraving that does not correspond to any real reference, or a number that repeats across multiple listings.

6. Dimensions and weight

Measure with calipers. The case should come in at 42.3 mm across and just under 14 mm thick. Copies frequently run a millimeter off in one direction or another, and the weight feels either hollow or oddly heavy for the size.

Price and paperwork are not proof

People assume a four-figure price means genuine. It does not. Copies sell for a few hundred dollars and then get flipped as real at full market value. What separates a real watch from a good copy is provenance: a service record, the original certificate, and clear photos of the movement. Ask for a timing machine printout. A healthy F388B holds tight daily rates with strong amplitude, and a seller who cannot produce that reading is telling you something.

Why this model is hard to fake well

The high-beat flyback caliber is the reason. Cloning a 5 Hz flyback chronograph inside a 42 mm case at a price that makes commercial sense is not something the replica industry has managed. Most copies sit at 4 Hz or use a hand-wound 3 Hz movement, and the pusher feel exposes them before you even look at the dial. Two minutes with a phone camera and a stopwatch will tell you more than any set of listing photos.
