Short answer

What forged carbon is
Audemars Piguet builds the case from carbon fiber strands cut to short lengths, mixed with resin, then compression molded in a steel tool. The fibers sit at random angles. Every case shows a different swirl. The surface is matte and dry. Density is lower than steel, so the finished watch reads light for its size.
A low-cost copy cannot match that process. It prints a carbon look onto plastic or lays carbon-look vinyl over steel. The pattern tiles across the case. Run your eye from lug to lug. A repeat means the case is not forged carbon.
Checkpoints
- Pattern repeat. Genuine is random. Copies show tiling.

- Texture. Genuine forged carbon is dry matte. Copies feel slick or glossy.

Prices and paperwork
Genuine Royal Oak Offshore forged carbon references trade above five figures on the secondhand market. An offer near three or four hundred dollars is a copy. Ask for the box, the warranty card, and service records. A serial number you cannot verify with a dealer proves nothing. A number check alone cannot settle it. Only a watchmaker with the case in hand can.
Limits of a photo check
Photographs compress detail. A fake can pass on a screen. Case weight, movement finish, and the feel of the pushers need hands on the watch. Pay for an independent inspection before you buy anything in this price bracket.
