A fake Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 16202 is a counterfeit copy of the 39mm "Jumbo" Extra-Thin that AP released in 2022 for the Royal Oak's 50th anniversary. The better copies get the silhouette and the Petite Tapisserie dial close enough to fool a phone photo, and that is exactly why they sell. Almost none of them survive a caliper, a loupe on the bezel screws, or a clear caseback shot. If you only have thirty seconds to judge one, check thickness first, screws second, movement finishing third.

What the real 16202 actually is

The reference was the headline act of the 50th anniversary year. It carries a 39mm case, 8.1mm thick, with the integrated bracelet that Gerald Genta sketched in 1972. Inside sits the Calibre 7121, a 4 Hz (28,800 vph) automatic with roughly 55 hours of power reserve, developed to replace the Calibre 2121 that had limped along for decades. The 2121 traced back to the Jaeger-LeCoultre 920, and AP finally moved on. Anniversary pieces shipped with a special 22k gold oscillating weight marked for the fifty years, which is a detail counterfeiters had to copy and mostly copied badly.

Steel 16202ST examples came with the deep blue "Nuage 50" dial. Gold references got their own tone. Retail sat in the low to mid $30,000s when the watch launched, and the secondary market pushed well past that for most of the run. A price gap that wide is the entire reason the fake market exists.

The checks that end most debates

1. Case thickness

This is the fastest test. The Jumbo is 8.1mm. I have seen replica 16202 cases measure anywhere from 9.4mm to just under 11mm with cheap calipers, and the extra metal shows in profile even before you measure. A real one slides under a shirt cuff like a dress watch. A fake looks like a diver that shrank unevenly.

2. Bezel screws

The eight hex screws on the bezel of the genuine watch are white gold and functional. They thread into the case and hold the bezel down. Slots are cut clean and sit at a consistent depth. The date window on a real 16202 is cleanly cut with a font that matches the dial's character. Replicas usually blunt the aperture corners and use a date wheel that reads slightly too bold or sits off center.

5. Movement and caseback

The 16202 has a sapphire display back, so there is nowhere to hide. Calibre 7121 shows hand-applied Cotes de Geneve on the bridges, circular graining, polished bevels, and a gold rotor that is engraved rather than stamped. Most fakes run a modified offshore movement with a decorative plate bolted on top. The engraving looks laser-cut, the bevels are dull, and the jewel count and beat rate rarely match spec. Take a sharp caseback photo and compare it side by side before you commit.

6. Bracelet and clasp

AP states the Royal Oak bracelet runs to 138 components. Genuine links are satin brushed on the flats with mirror chamfers along the edges, and the bracelet tapers without a rattle. Replicas usually give you sharp edges on the outer links, a hinge that clacks, and a clasp engraving that looks etched instead of stamped deep. End links on a fake often sit a hair off the case instead of flush.

Why "superclone" replicas still get caught

The high-end replica scene has gotten better at exteriors and no better at the hard part. A clone movement can keep decent time, but it cannot replicate the finishing that a trained eye reads through a loupe in ten seconds. Case geometry is the other gap. If the real thing is out of reach

The integrated bracelet look is not exclusive to AP.
