Fake Audemars Piguet watches with complications almost always fall into one of two groups. Either the extra function is mechanically real but built on a cheap third-party movement, or it is decorative and only looks like a complication. A genuine Royal Oak chronograph or perpetual calendar runs an in-house calibre with its own module engineering, so the useful comparison is not "real versus fake" as much as "engineered versus assembled" and "measured in decades versus measured in months."

If you remember one thing, remember this: complications are where counterfeits get exposed fastest. Case, dial and bracelet can be copied well. A working perpetual calendar cannot be faked cheaply.

What counts as a complication

In watchmaking, a complication is any function beyond hours, minutes and seconds. Audemars Piguet's catalogue lists plenty of them: date, day, month, moonphase, chronograph, GMT, equation of time, minute repeater, tourbillon, perpetual calendar. Some are genuinely useful, some are bragging rights. On fakes the split matters, because each one costs a counterfeiter a different amount of effort to imitate.

Order of difficulty, easiest to hardest: simple date, then day/date, then GMT, then chronograph, then moonphase, then annual or perpetual calendar, then tourbillon, then minute repeater. The further along you go, the more the copy drifts away from the real object.

The complications counterfeits actually attempt

Chronograph

This is the most common "complication" on a fake AP and the most frequently copied. Genuine Royal Oak chronographs use AP's own chronograph calibres. Many replicas use a Seagull or Valjoux-derived movement, or a module bolted on top of an ordinary three-hand base.

What I check first: push the top pusher and watch the central chrono hand. A real column wheel starts with a clean snap and no stutter. Cheaper modules drag, jump, or reset slightly past twelve. Subdial spacing is the second tell. On a fake, the subdials often sit too close together or sit low on the dial because the module geometry was inherited from a different watch.

Moonphase

A moonphase is just a disc behind an aperture in the dial, which is why fakes get it half right. The giveaway is the disc itself. On a genuine AP perpetual calendar the moonphase stays accurate to about one day in 122 years. A fake disc is typically a printed wheel on a generic 29.5-day cycle, so it drifts within a couple of months. Most replica discs also carry the wrong moon graphics or the wrong number of stars, and on some watches the "moonphase" is simply a painted gradient behind the opening.

Perpetual calendar

This is the one that breaks counterfeits. A perpetual calendar knows February has 28 days, then 29 in a leap year, and keeps date, day, month and moonphase rolling without correction until 2100. Fake "perpetual calendars" are almost always annual calendars or plain date windows dressed up with extra subdials. If a watch needs manual correction every February that is not a leap year, it is not perpetual, no matter what the dial says.

Tourbillon

Real tourbillons do exist inside some fakes, usually Chinese-made, and the escapement can be genuine. The distinction is what rotates. A true tourbillon turns the entire balance and escapement inside a carriage once a minute. A lot of fake APs instead use an open-heart dial where the balance wheel oscillates but never orbits. Check the seconds: if there is a separate running seconds hand, it is not a tourbillon, because on a real one the carriage itself acts as the seconds indicator.

Where the differences show up first

  • Thickness. Modules add height. Genuine complicated APs are built thin; fakes stack a module on a base movement and the case gets fat and top-heavy on the wrist.
  • Printing. Day, month and date discs use specific typography. Fakes often get the weight wrong or use fuzzy pad printing.
  • Dial cutouts. A proper aperture has a chamfered, polished edge. A cheap one is punched and looks flat and burred under a loupe.
  • Reset and alignment. Chrono hands, date discs and moonphase wheels should snap to exact positions every time, not drift.
  • Movement side. Look at bevels, anglage, perlage and the engraving on the rotor. Machine-applied decoration is shallow and perfectly uniform. Hand finishing is not, and it shows.

Why the movement matters more than the case

Cases and bracelets are CNC-cut, so they can be copied well. Complications are where tooling, tolerance, patent knowledge and years of movement design actually live. Audemars Piguet builds its complicated calibres in-house, and the module architecture is specific to the watch. A counterfeit buys whatever movement is cheapest to fit into a Royal Oak-shaped case and then decorates it. That is the whole story of fake AP complications: the function may run, but the engineering behind it is borrowed, and the watch tells you so within a day of wearing it.
