Short answer
A fake Aqua Terra Co-Axial Master Chronometer rarely survives a look at the back. Real ones carry a METAS Master Chronometer certificate, a free-sprung balance with a silicon hairspring, and a serial that matches across the case, the movement and the paperwork. Replicas copy the dial text, the rotor engraving and the box. The movement is where they stop.
What the name on the dial promises
Master Chronometer is not a word Omega invented for the box lid. Every watch wearing it has been tested at METAS in Switzerland over eight days across eight categories, and passed. Those tests cover rate in six positions, an average daily deviation of 0 to +5 seconds, functioning while exposed to a 15,000 gauss magnetic field, power reserve and water resistance. The results belong to that specific watch, and the watch ships with a certificate number.
Co-Axial refers to the escapement, George Daniels' design that cuts sliding friction between the pallet stones and the escape wheel teeth. In an Aqua Terra the calibre is an 8900 or an 8800. The 41mm models use the 8900 with twin barrels and roughly 60 hours of reserve; the smaller ones use the 8800.
Dial and case tells
- The teak deck lines on the dial should be cut, even and sharp under a loupe. On replicas they look printed and slightly soft at the edges.
- Applied markers sit flat and flush. Real ones have crisp, upright flanks and a polished bevel that catches light in a single line.
- The date window edges are chamfered, not punched. The date font on fakes is often too thin or too wide.
- Case brushing should run in one direction across the flanks, with a clean, straight transition into the polished bezel. Replica transitions are usually rounded off.
The movement is the hard part
Start with the balance cock. A free-sprung balance has no regulator arm and no Etachron stud carrier. Almost every replica movement is a decorated ETA 2824 or a Seagull clone, and both of those carry a regulator arm sitting on top of the balance cock. Once you have seen that shape, you can spot it in a phone photo.
Other movement clues: the co-axial escape wheel has a stepped, three-level geometry that reads as a distinct shape under magnification. Rotor engraving on replicas is shallow and filled with paint, while the real letters are cut into the metal. Screw heads are polished and chamfered at the slot, not stamped flat.
A quick checklist
- Ask for a photo of the balance and balance cock. No regulator arm is a good sign.
- Ask for the METAS certificate number and verify it.
- Compare the serial on the caseback, the movement and the card. All three should match.
- Inspect the printing of "Master Chronometer" and "Swiss Made". Replicas tend to print it heavy or with the spacing off.
- Check the clasp. Two push buttons, a polished center link, and edges that do not bite your wrist.
- Weigh it. Steel, sapphire and a proper movement add up. Fakes often feel light and hollow.
Why buying one is a bad trade
Importing counterfeit trademarked goods into the US is illegal. CBP seizes shipments and can assess fines. Swatch Group will not service a fake, so a failed movement turns the watch into a paperweight with no parts supply behind it. Resale value is near zero, and passing one on to another buyer is straightforward trademark counterfeiting. If the look is what you are after, a used Aqua Terra, a Seiko, or a microbrand diver gets you a real, serviceable watch for similar money.
For the honest answer to the search term: a genuine Co-Axial Master Chronometer has a test result attached to its own serial number. A replica has a dial that says the same words. That gap is the whole story.
