The Saxonia is one of the cleanest designs in high-end watchmaking: thin case, small seconds or a plain two-hand dial, almost no clutter. That simplicity is exactly why copies exist. A plain dress watch is easy to imitate at arm's length and very hard to imitate once you hold it.

What the real Saxonia is
A. Lange & Söhne relaunched in 1994 after German reunification, and the Saxonia was one of the four models in that first modern collection. Hand-wound movements, Glashütte three-quarter plate in untreated German silver, screwed gold chatons, a balance cock engraved by hand. Cases run roughly 34mm to 40mm depending on the reference and era. Dials are usually argenté or a soft white, often printed rather than applied, with blued steel hands.
That matters, because most of what makes a Saxonia a Saxonia sits on the back of the watch, not the front.

The tiers you will run into
Market language is loose. "Copy," "replica," "clone," and "super clone" get thrown at very different products.
- Mall tier. Quartz or basic automatic, printed dial, plated case. Feels hollow. Proportions are wrong. The name script usually gives it away first, with letters that crowd together or float.
- Mid tier. Automatic with a decorated rotor, sapphire crystal, passable case shape. Fine on a wrist at two feet. The side profile is off and the lugs are too thick.
- Top tier. Hand-wound or a thin automatic, closer case dimensions, blued hands, sapphire caseback. This is what most buyers mean when they search. It still is not a Lange movement, and the engraving is cut by machine.
What I check first
Order matters here. Anyone can make a dial photo look good.
- Case thickness and side profile. Lange cases are slim through the midcase. Most copies sit a millimeter or two proud.
- Lug shape. Long, slender, angled downward. Copies tend to be stubby.
- Dial printing under a loupe. Letter edges, spacing of the "Made in Germany" line, the fine minute track.
- Hands. Blued steel reads dark blue with a slight sheen, not flat navy paint. Check the seconds hand against the track.
- Movement. Three-quarter plate, blued screws, engraved balance cock. On copies you get a generic movement with a decorative plate screwed over it.
- Crown and winding feel. A hand-wound Lange winds smooth and precise. Cheap ones grind.
Where every copy gives itself away
Finishing. Lange bevels are polished by hand and the interior angles stay sharp. Machine finishing leaves softer, rounder edges. Screws are another tell: hand-polished screws have crisp, even slots, and mass-produced ones do not. Then there is the engraving on the balance cock, cut with a graver by one engraver on the real thing. Laser or stamped versions look shallow and repeat the same pattern.
And service. A genuine Saxonia can go back to Glashütte for a rebuild. A copy has no parts pipeline. When it stops, it stops.
Legal and practical notes
Selling counterfeit branded goods is illegal in the United States and across most of Europe. US Customs can seize shipments, and marketplaces pull listings when rights holders complain. Buying is a grayer area in most places, but importing is not.
Price tells its own story. Copies run from under a hundred dollars to several hundred for the better ones. Genuine Saxonia references trade in the mid four figures to low five figures depending on model and condition. No copy appreciates. None of them are investments, and that is fine as long as you go in knowing it.
Bottom line
If you want the look of a Saxonia on a budget and you accept it is costume, a top-tier copy delivers that look. If what you want is the thing itself, a thin hand-wound movement, hand finishing, German silver, hand engraving, the copy will disappoint you inside a week. The design is easy to copy. The rest of it is not.
