Short answer
A fake IW329086 is a copy of the IWC Pilot's Watch Automatic 36. The genuine watch has a 36 mm steel case, a soft-iron inner cage for magnetic protection and IWC calibre 35111. Most replicas match the 36 mm size and miss the movement, the dial print and the caseback engraving.
What the reference covers
The IW3290 family is the Pilot's Watch Automatic 36, released in 2016. IWC lists steel cases with black, silver-plated and blue dials. Case thickness is about 10.5 mm. Water resistance is 6 bar. The crystal is sapphire with antireflective coating on both faces. Lug width is 18 mm.
IWC reference numbers in this family run from IW329001 upward. We found no IWC catalog page for IW329086 itself. Treat any listing that uses that number as unverified until the seller shows the caseback number and the warranty card.
Where replicas fail
- Movement. Genuine watches use IWC calibre 35111, based on the Sellita SW300-1: 25 jewels, 28,800 vph, 42 hour power reserve. Replicas use a Miyota 9015 or a Chinese clone with a decorated rotor.
- Inner case. The genuine has a soft-iron cage around the movement. It adds mass and changes the sound of the rotor. Replicas skip it.
- Dial. The date sits at 3 o'clock. Print on the genuine dial is sharp under a loupe. Replica print shows bleed on the IWC and SCHAFFHAUSEN lines.
- Caseback. Genuine casebacks carry the reference, the serial and a sapphire window. Replica engraving is laser-etched, shallow and uneven in depth.
- Hands. Genuine hands are polished with lume applied level to the metal. Replicas show lume sitting above the edge.
- Crown. Screw-down crown, 6 bar rated. Replica crowns feel rough after 20 turns.
Checks before you buy
- Ask for the caseback number in a photo and compare it to the warranty card.
- Ask for a timegrapher photo. Calibre 35111 runs about +2 to +7 seconds a day.
- Weigh the watch. The soft-iron cage adds mass that clones lack. Compare against a known sample, not a spec sheet.
- Shoot the dial at 10x and compare letter spacing to an IWC catalog photo.
- Test the lume. Genuine Super-LumiNova glows green and fades in about 4 hours.
- Check the strap and buckle. Genuine hardware has a signed pin and even stitching.
Price context
Genuine IW3290 models trade on the secondary market in the low to mid four figures in USD, depending on dial and bracelet. Replicas sell from about $80 to $400. A price under $500 for a new watch with box and papers is a warning sign.
What is not known
IWC does not publish a full public reference list. We could not confirm IW329086 as a catalog number. Ask the seller for the reference engraved on the caseback and check it against the papers before you pay.
